NEW YORK HOG INVENTORY DOWN SLIGHTLY

Pork producers in New York had 83,000 hogs and pigs on hand December 1, 2005. This total was down 1 percent from the 84,000 head on hand a year earlier.  Of the current inventory, 10,000 hogs are for breeding purposes, down 2,000 head from the previous December. The remaining 73,000 hogs and pigs, raised for home use or the slaughter market, is 1 percent above a year ago. 

The New York hog breeders produced a crop of 130,000 pigs during 2005, down 22 percent from a year earlier. Nationally, the 2005 pig crop was up one percent from a year earlier at 104 million head.

The U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on farms as of December 1, 2005 totaled 61.2 million head. This total was unchanged from December 1, 2004. Breeding inventory, at 6 million head, was up 1 percent from December 1, 2004. Market hog inventory, at 55.2 million head, was unchanged from last year, but 1 percent below last quarter.

U.S. hog producers intend to have 2.88 million sows farrow during the December 2005-February 2006 quarter, up 1 percent from the actual farrowings during the same period in both 2005 and 2004. Intended farrowings for March-May 2006, at 2.89 million sows, are up slightly from 2005 and up 1 percent from 2004.

2004 NEW YORK TURKEY PRODUCTION UP 7 PERCENT

Turkey producers in New York raised 620,000 turkeys during 2005  This total is up 7 percent from the 2004 number raised and up 9 percent from the 2003 number raised.  Nationally, 256 million turkeys were raised in 2005, down 3 percent from the 2004 total. Minnesota ranked first in the number raised with 44.5 million, followed by North Carolina with 36.0 million, Arkansas with 29.0 million, Virginia with 21.0 million, Missouri with 20.5 million, California with 14.9 million, and Indiana with 13.4 million.

U.S. TURKEY OUTLOOK FOR 2006

Turkey growers in 23 States intend to increase the number of birds raised by 4 percent in 2006. The number of turkeys actually raised in 2006 may vary from growers' intentions shown in this report depending on feed costs, supply of hatching eggs, cost of poults, and prices growers receive for turkeys during the next few months.

DECEMBER PRICES RECEIVED MIXED

Prices received by New York producers during December for selected commodities were mixed compared with a month earlier. Prices for corn, wheat, soybeans, and wholesale milk declined while prices for hay, potatoes, apples, and eggs increased. The price of oats was unchanged.

At the National level, the preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in December, at 114, based on 1990-92=100, increased 1 point (0.9 percent) from November. Producers received higher commodity prices for tomatoes, corn, strawberries, and lettuce. Lower prices were received for oranges, broilers, dairy, and grapes.
