WINTER WHEAT SEEDINGS
| New York producers seeded a total of 125,000 acres of winter wheat in the fall of 2007 for harvest in 2008. This is up 25 percent from the 100,000 acres seeded a year ago. U.S. winter wheat seeded area for 2008 is expected to total 46.6 million acres, up 4 percent from 2007. |

| NEW YORK HAY STOCKS UP New York farms held a total of 1.67 million tons of hay on December 1, 2007, compared with 1.45 million tons on hand December 1, 2006. Nationally, hay stocks on farms December 1, 2007 was estimated at 104 million tons. This estimate reflects an 8 percent increase from last year’s 96 million tons. |
2007 CORN PRODUCTION UP New York grain corn production totaled 69.9 million bushels in 2007, up 13 percent from the 61.9 million bushels in 2006. Acres harvested for grain totaled 550,000, up 15 percent from the 480,000 acres harvested last year. The statewide yield, at a record high 127 bushels per acre, was down 2 bushels from last year’s record high 129 bushels per acre. |

NEW YORK HOG INVENTORY DECLINES
| Pork producers in New York had 86,000 hogs and pigs on hand December 1, 2007. This total was down 12 percent from the 98,000 head on hand a year earlier. Of the current inventory, 11,000 hogs are for breeding purposes down 1,000 head from the previous December. The remaining 75,000 hogs and pigs, raised for home use or the slaughter market, declined by 11,000 head from a year ago. U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on December 1, 2007 was 65.1 million head. This was up 4 percent from December 1, 2006, but down 1 percent from September 1, 2007. Breeding inventory, at 6.16 million head, was up 1 percent from last year, and up slightly from the previous quarter. Market hog inventory, at 59.0 million head, was up 5 percent from last year, but down 1 percent from last quarter. The September-November 2007 pig crop, at 28.0 million head, was up 4 percent from 2006 and up 7 percent from 2005. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 3.03 million head, up 3 percent from 2006 and up 4 percent from 2005. The sows farrowed during this quarter represented 49 percent of the breeding herd. The average pigs saved per litter was 9.24 for the September-November 2007 period, compared to 9.11 last year. Pigs saved per litter by size of operation ranged from 7.40 for operations with 1-99 hogs and pigs to 9.30 for operations with more than 5,000 hogs and pigs. |

| 2007 NEW YORK TURKEY PRODUCTION UP 2 PERCENT Turkey producers in New York raised 640,000 turkeys during 2007. This total is up 2 percent from the 2006 number raised and up 3 percent from the 2005 number raised. Minnesota ranked first in the number raised with 48.0 million, followed by North Carolina with 39.0 million, Arkansas with 31.0 million, Virginia with 22.0 million, Missouri with 20.0 million, California with 16.0 million, and Indiana with 15.3 million. These States accounted for 70 percent of the turkeys produced in the United States during 2007. |
U.S. TURKEY OUTLOOK FOR 2007 Turkey growers in 23 States intend to increase the number of birds raised by 2 percent in 2008. The number of turkeys actually raised in 2008 may vary from growers' intentions shown in this report depending on feed costs, supply of hatching eggs, cost of poults, and prices growers receive for turkeys during the next few months. DECEMBER MILK PRICES DECREASED FROM NOVEMBER
| Prices received by New York producers for milk sold during December decreased from a month earlier. The price of hay and potatoes also decreased. The price of eggs, corn, and apples increased. Many previous month prices were revised due to more complete sales information. The preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in December, at 151 percent, based on 1990-92=100, increased 5 points (3.4 percent) from November. The Crop Index is up 10 points (6.5 percent) but the Livestock Index is unchanged. Producers received higher commodity prices for tomatoes, corn, soybeans, and wheat. |
