NEW YORK CATTLE INVENTORY DECREASES

All cattle and calves in New York on January 1, 2001 totaled 1.38 million head, down 5 percent from a year earlier. The 2000 New York calf crop totaled 640,000 head, down 3 percent from the previous year. Milk cows, at 670,000 head, were down 4 percent. New York ranked third nationally in the number of milk cows behind California and Wisconsin.

All cattle and calves in the United States as of January 1, 2001 totaled 97.3 million head, down 1 percent from January 1, 2000. There were 1.08 million places with cattle in 2000, down 2 percent from the previous year. In New York, there were 17,000 operations with cattle, down 3 percent from 1999. Of this total, 7,900 operations had one or more milk cows.

NEW YORK SHEEP INVENTORY INCREASES

The number of sheep and lambs on farms across New York State on January 1, 2001 totaled 60,000 head, up 3 percent from a year ago. The United States sheep and lamb inventory totaled 6.92 million head, down 2 percent from 2000. Inventory has slowly declined since 1942 when all sheep and lambs reached a peak of 56.2 million head.

A total of 46,000 lambs were born in New York during 2000, down 4 percent from 1999. Breeding ewes one year old and older in the state at the beginning of 2000 totaled 38,000 head, which gives a lambing rate of 121 lambs per 100 ewes, compared with 133 for 1999. New York had 1,500 places with sheep in 2000, up from 1,400 a year earlier.

JANUARY PRICES RECEIVED DECLINE

Prices received by New York farmers during January were mostly lower compared with a month earlier. Prices for soybeans, hay, potatoes, apples, milk, and eggs decreased while prices for corn, oats, and wheat increased.

Nationally, the January All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by U.S. Farmers was 96 based on 1990-92=100, down 2 points from the December Index. Lower prices for eggs, cotton, hogs, and soybeans were partially offset by higher prices for cattle, tomatoes, milk, and strawberries.

NEW YORK CHICKEN INVENTORY INCREASES

All chickens in New York State, excluding commercial broilers, totaled 5.6 million birds on December 1, 2000. This total is up 12 percent from December a year ago.

The U.S. total of 435 million chickens is down slightly from a year ago. Potential layers in the nation (hens and pullets of laying age, plus pullets from 13 to 20 weeks of age) on hand December 1, 2000 totaled 371 million, up 1 percent from a year earlier. Of the 371 million on hand, 90 percent were of laying age, and the remainder were pullets from 13 to 20 weeks of age.

Egg production on New York farms during the year ending November 30, 2000 totaled 1,113 million eggs, up 9 percent from the 1,017 million produced in the same period a year earlier. National production for the year was 84.4 billion eggs, up 2 percent from 1999.

All hens and pullets of laying age in New York averaged 3.97 million during the 2000 yearly period, up 9 percent from the previous year. The annual average production per layer totaled 280 eggs in 2000, unchanged from in 1999. Over the same period, the U.S. annual production per layer was 257 eggs, also unchanged from 1999.

JANUARY MILK PRODUCTION DOWN

During January, New York dairy herds produced 958 million pounds of milk, down 6 percent from the 1.02 billion pounds produced in January 2000. Milk per cow averaged 1,430 pounds, down 20 pounds from the previous January. The milking herd decreased 30,000 head from a year earlier to 670,000 head.

Milk output in the 20 major production States totaled 12.1 billion pounds, down 1.5 percent from January a year ago. Output per cow averaged 1,550 pounds, 29 pounds below January 2000, while the number of milk cows increased by 27,000 head to 7.79 million.

NEW YORK EGG PRODUCTION INCREASES

New York egg production during December totaled 99 million eggs, 10 percent above a year earlier. Both the number of layers and the egg laying rate were above the previous December. Hens being force molted on January 1, 2001 accounted for 2.5 percent of the laying flock, while 4.5 percent had completed a force molt.

Laying flocks throughout the Nation produced 7.28 billion eggs during December 2000, down slightly from a year ago. An indication of future egg supply, egg-type chicks hatched in the U.S. during December were up 6 percent, while eggs in incubators on January 1, 2001 were up 11 percent from a year earlier.
