NEW YORK CATTLE INVENTORY INCREASES

All cattle and calves in New York on January 1, 2003 totaled 1.45 million head, up 4 percent from a year earlier. The 2002 New York calf crop totaled 640,000 head, up 3 percent from the previous year. Milk cows, at 680,000 head, were up 1 percent. New York ranked third nationally in the number of milk cows behind California and Wisconsin.

All cattle and calves in the United States as of January 1, 2003 totaled 96.1 million head, down 1 percent from January 1, 2002. There were 1.03 million places with cattle in 2002, down 2 percent from the previous year. In New York, there were 15,000 operations with cattle, down 6 percent from 2001. Of this total, 7,100 operations had one or more milk cows, down 1 percent from 2001.

NEW YORK SHEEP INVENTORY INCREASES

The number of sheep and lambs on farms across New York State on January 1, 2003 totaled 65,000 head, up 5 thousand from a year ago. The United States sheep and lamb inventory totaled 6.35 million head, down 5 percent from 2002. Inventory has slowly declined since 1942 when all sheep and lambs reached a peak of 56.2 million head.

A total of 51,000 lambs were born in New York during 2002, an increase of 4 percent from 2001. Breeding ewes one year old and older in the state at the beginning of 2001 totaled 40,000 head, which gives a lambing rate of 128 lambs per 100 ewes, compared with 129 for 2001. New York had 1,500 places with sheep in 2002, unchanged from a year earlier.

NEW YORK CHICKEN INVENTORY INCREASES IN 2002

All chickens on farms in New York, excluding commercial broilers, totaled 4.89 million birds on December 1, 2002. This total is up 3 percent from the 4.73 million on farms a year earlier. The total value of these birds was up 10 percent to $7.83 million.

The U.S. total number of chickens on hand on December 1, 2002 was 439 million birds, down 1 percent from last year. Potential layers (layers 20 weeks old and older, plus pullets 13 weeks and older but less than 20 weeks) on hand December 1, 2002, totaled 377 million, down 1 percent from December 1, 2001. Of the 377 million potential layers, 89 percent were 20 weeks old and older and the remainders were pullets 13 weeks and older but less than 20 weeks.

Egg production on New York farms during the year ended November 30, 2002 totaled 1.10 billion eggs, down 4 percent from the 1.14 billion produced in the same period a year earlier. National production for the year, at a record high 86.7 billion eggs, was up 1 percent from 2001.

The number of hens and pullets of laying age in New York averaged 3.89 million during the 2002 yearly period, down 6 percent from the previous year. The New York annual production per layer averaged 283 eggs in 2002, 6 eggs more than the 2001 average. Over the same period, the U.S. annual production per layer averaged 257 eggs, 1 more than in 2001.

JANUARY MILK PRODUCTION UP

New York dairy herds produced 1.04 billion pounds of milk during January, up 0.7 percent from the January 2002 level. The increase was the result of more milk cows. The number of milk cows totaled 680,000, up 5,000 from January of the previous year. Milk per cow averaged 1,530 pounds, unchanged from January 2002.

Milk production in the 20 major states during January totaled 12.5 billion pounds, up 1.8 percent from production in these same states during January 2002. Production per cow averaged 1,608 pounds for January, 17 pounds above January 2002. The number of cows on farms in the 20 major states was 7.81 million head, 56,000 head more than January 2002, and 4,000 head more than December 2002.

DECEMBER EGG PRODUCTION DOWN 4 PERCENT

Egg production on New York farms totaled 90 million eggs in December 2002, 4 percent less than the same month a year earlier. The decrease was the result of fewer layers plus a lower rate of lay. The number of hens and pullets of laying age, at 3.65 million, was down 4 percent from December 2001, while the rate of lay was down 1 percent to 24.67 eggs per layer.

Laying flocks in the United States produced 7.38 billion eggs during December 2002, down 1 percent from the previous December. An indication of future egg supply, chicks hatched in the U.S. during December for the purpose of egg production totaled 32.2 million, up 2 percent from December 2001. Eggs in incubators on January 1, 2003 totaled 30.1 million, down 4 percent from the January 1, 2002 total.
