NEW YORK CROP

AND LIVESTOCK REPORT

Released: February 2004

Monthly

No. 973-2-04

NEW YORK CATTLE INVENTORY DECREASES

All cattle and calves in New York on January 1, 2004 totaled 1.42 million head, down 2 percent from a year earlier. The 2003 New York calf crop totaled 620,000 head, down 3 percent from the previous year. Milk cows, at 658,000 head, were down 3 percent. New York ranked third nationally in the number of milk cows behind California and Wisconsin.

All cattle and calves in the United States as of January 1, 2003 totaled 96.1 million head, down 1 percent from January 1, 2002.

NEW YORK SHEEP INVENTORY DECREASES

The number of sheep and lambs on farms across New York State on January 1, 2004 totaled 70,000 head, down 2 thousand from a year ago. The United States sheep and lamb inventory totaled 6.09 million head, down 3 percent from 2003. Inventory has slowly declined since 1942 when all sheep and lambs reached a peak of 56.2 million head.

A total of 51,000 lambs were born in New York during 2003, no change from 2002. Breeding ewes one year old and older in the state at the beginning of 2003 totaled 42,000 head, which gives a lambing rate of 121 lambs per 100 ewes, compared with 128 for 2002.
