2000 ANNUAL SUMMARY

The value of all New York vegetable production in 2000 totaled $378 million, according to the New York Agricultural Statistics Service. New York ranked fifth in the nation for the value of principle fresh market vegetables and seventh for the value of principle processed vegetables in 2000.

This year, six crops were added to New York's fresh market vegetable program: bell peppers, eggplant, escarole/endive, pumpkins, spinach, and squash. Carrots and lettuce were dropped from the program. Those crops that remain in the program include cauliflower, cucumbers, snap beans, sweet corn, tomatoes, onions, and cabbage.

The value of the Empire State's principle fresh market vegetables totaled $335 million this year. Fresh market production in 2000 is estimated at 17.2 million cwt.

The 2000 New York processing vegetable program dropped carrots from its estimates, while all other crops remained the same.

Processing vegetables were valued at $42.6 million in 2000 and production totaled 389,320 tons.
