STORAGE CABBAGE STOCKS DOWN
22 PERCENT Cabbage stocks for New York as of January 1, 2001 are estimated at 1.43 million hundredweight, according to the New York Agricultural Statistics Service. This is 22 percent below the holdings for the same date last year. Yields are estimated at 440 cwt. (hundredweight) per acre in 2000, up 7 percent from last year. The quality of cabbage in storage is 55 percent above average, 41 percent average, and 4 percent below average. The head sizes of the cabbage in storage is 58 percent large, 34 percent medium, and 8 percent small. Storage quality and head size also increased from last year's crop. CABBAGE:

U.S. PLANTED ACREAGE OF SPRING ONIONS LOWER U.S. growers intend to plant 37,000 acres of spring onions for 2001, down 11 percent from 2000 and 8 percent below 1999. All four spring onion states decreased planted acreage for 2001. Planting is on schedule in California. The Texas crop looks good in most areas with plenty of rain.
