VEGETABLES

Released: April 2002
Seasonal
No. 984-3-02

STORAGE ONIONS:    New York growers intend to plant the same acreage as 2001. Due to the continuing drought, growers are extremely cautious and are waiting for rain. Planting in Orange County, New York was about 15 percent complete which is typical for the end of March. Total U.S. storage onion acreage is 109,450 acres, up 3 percent from last year. California acreage, which is primarily dehydrated or otherwise processed, is forecast at 31,500 acreage, up 7 percent from 2001. Colorado has had an unusually dry winter leaving the mountain snowpack at 50 percent of average and fields short on moisture. Growers are concerned about possible water shortages later this year and planting is currently behind schedule due to lower than average temperatures. Idaho onion acreage is the highest it has been since 1996, but water supplies are still questionable. Producers in the Treasure Valley, where most onions are grown, are optimistic about irrigation supplies this summer. Washington's storage onion crop is running about a week behind schedule. Favorable weather conditions should have planting wrapped up in the Columbia Basin by early April.

SPRING ONIONS:    Producers intend to harvest 38,500 acres, up 6 percent from last year. California spring onions
were planted last fall with no problems reported. Georgia growers had a warm, dry fall. Texas onions have made a remarkable comeback from an early March freeze.

STRAWBERRIES:    Acreage intended for spring harvest is forecast at 32,600 acres, up 7 percent from last year's
comparable States. Florida's winter acreage for harvest if forecast at 6,900 acres, up 6 percent from last year. Warmer temperatures in California have slowed transplants growth and development. Michigan growers are concerned about the lack of rainfall last summer and that it may adversely affect conditions this year.

SNAP BEANS:    Processors contracted to plant 198,500 acres, up 2 percent from last year's comparable states.
Contracted acreage for freezing is 59,900 acres, down 16 percent from last year. Contracted acreage for canning is up 12 percent to 138,600 acres. Due to wet weather California growers experience small delays during planting. Planting is scheduled to begin in late April in Illinois. Indiana growers began preparing fields during a warmer than normal February. Oregon growers are dealing with the economic pressure of lagging prices, decreased availability of processors, the high cost of inputs, drought conditions in previous years, and soaring electricity rates. Pennsylvania received no accumulated snowfall amounts during February, but had winter precipitation and colder temperatures during March across the State.

GREEN PEAS:     New York acreage contracted for green peas for processing is forecasted at 17,700 acres, down
four percent from last year, but up seven percent from 2000. Nationwide acreage is forecasted to be 224,100 acres for processing. This is three percent higher than last years comparable states. Contracted acreage for freezing is 122,900 acres, 2 percent less than last years comparable states. Canning contract acres is 101,200, 11 percent higher than 2001. Oregon growers are concerned with lagging prices, decreased availability of processors, the high cost of inputs, drought conditions in previous years, and soaring electricity rates.
