APRIL MILK PRODUCTION DOWN 4 PERCENT

New York dairy herds produced 972 million pounds of milk during April, down 4 percent from the previous year. Both a smaller milking herd and a lower output per cow contributed to the decrease.

Milk production in the 20 major States during April totaled 12.2 billion pounds, down 1.9 percent from production in these same States in April 2000. Production per cow was 21 pounds below a year earlier.

NEW YORK EGG PRODUCTION FOR MARCH INCREASES

New York egg production during March totaled 98 million eggs, 3 percent above a year earlier. An increase in the size of the laying flock more than offset a decrease in the egg laying rate.

Laying flocks throughout the Nation produced 7.33 billion eggs during March 2001, up 1 percent from a year ago. An indication of future egg supply, egg-type chicks hatched in the U.S. during March were up 3 percent, while eggs in incubators on April 1, 2001 were up 9 percent from a year earlier.
