APRIL PRICES DECREASED
Prices received by New York producers during April for selected commodities decreased from a month earlier. The price of corn, wheat, hay, apples, milk and eggs decreased. The price of oats increased. The price of potatoes remained unchanged. Many previous month prices were revised due to more complete sales information.
Grain corn, at $2.44 per bushel, decreased 3 cents from March but increased 5 cents from last year. Oat price, at $1.72 per bushel, increased 4 cents from March but decreased 15 cents from April last year. Wheat price is $3.34, 29 cents below last month but 51 cents above last year. Hay averaged $111.00 per ton, $1.00 less than March but $17.00 more than April 2005. Potatoes averaged $12.70 per hundredweight, unchanged from March but $5.65 more than April a year ago. Fresh market apple prices at the packinghouse door averaged 25.50 cents per pound this month, .40 cents less than March but 3.50 cents more than April 2005.
Dairy farmers in the Empire State received an average of $12.50 per hundredweight of milk sold during April, down 90 cents from March and down $3.00 from April a year ago. Poultry producers received an average of 33 cents per dozen eggs sold, down 17 cents from March but up 8 cents from April 2005.
The preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in April, at 115, based on 1990-92=100, increased 1 point (0.9 percent) from March. The Crop Index is up 11 points (9.3 percent) but the Livestock Index decreased 6 points (5.5 percent). Producers received higher commodity prices for lettuce, tomatoes, onions and strawberries. Lower prices were received for broilers, cattle, eggs, and hogs. The overall index is also affected by the seasonal change based on a 3-year average mix of commodities a producer sells. Increased average marketings of strawberries, cattle, sweet corn, and oranges offset decreased marketings of soybeans, corn, wheat, and hogs.
