NEW YORK WINTER WHEAT PRODUCTION UP

Results from the May 2008 Agricultural Yield Survey show winter wheat production in New York is forecast at 6.60 million bushels, up 49 percent from 2007's output. Acreage for harvest is up 41 percent while yields are expected to average 55 bushels per acre, up 3 bushels from a year ago. The U.S. winter wheat crop is placed at 1.78 billion bushels, up 17 percent from 2007.

NEW YORK HAY STOCKS DOWN

Hay stocks on New York farms on May 1, 2008 totaled 283 thousand tons, down 13 percent from the 326 thousand tons on farms on May 1, 2007. Nationally, on farm hay stocks totaled 21.6 million tons, up 44 percent from the previous year.

2007 NEW YORK MILK PRODUCTION

Total milk production in New York during 2007, at 12.1 billion pounds, was up slightly from 2006. The annual average number of milk cows, at 627,000 head, was down 1.7 percent from the previous year. Annual output per cow averaged 19,303 pounds, up 2.2 percent from 2006.

Cash receipts from the sale of New York milk during 2007 totaled $2.4 billion, up 47.7 percent from the previous year. The $19.70 per hundredweight received for all milk sold by New York farmers was up $6.30, or 47.0 percent, from the $13.40 received in 2006. Marketing totals include whole milk and producer-separated cream sold to plants and dealers as well as milk sold directly to consumers.

New York dairymen used 32 million pounds of milk on their farms during 2007, unchanged from the previous year. About 93.7 percent of the milk used on farms was fed back to calves. The value of all milk produced, including milk fed back to calves, totaled $2.4 billion, up 47.7 percent from 2006.

U.S. milk production increased 2.1 percent in 2007 to 186 billion pounds. The rate per cow, at 20,267 pounds, was 316 pounds above 2006. The annual average number of milk cows on farms was 9.16 million head, up 46,000 head from 2006. Cash receipts from marketings of milk during 2007 totaled $35.4 billion, 51.4 percent higher than 2006. Producer returns averaged $19.21 per hundredweight, 48.2 percent above 2006. Marketings totaled 184 billion pounds, 2.1 percent above 2006. Marketings include whole milk sold to plants and dealers and milk sold directly to consumers.

An estimated 1.17 billion pounds of milk were used on farms where produced, 1.0 percent more than 2006. Calves were fed 87 percent of this milk, with the remainder consumed in producer households.

2007 POULTRY OUTPUT VALUED
AT $82.2 MILLION

The combined value of New York produced eggs, broilers, and turkeys, and the value of sales for other chickens, was $82.2 million for the year ending November 30, 2007. This total is UP 76 percent from a year earlier. Of the 2007 combined value, 90 percent was derived from eggs and 10 percent was from turkeys.

APRIL MILK PRICES INCREASED FROM MARCH

Prices received by New York producers for milk sold during April were unchanged from a month earlier. The price of eggs and corn decreased. The price of wheat, oats, apples, potatoes, and hay increased. Many previous month prices were revised due to more complete sales information.

Grain corn, at $5.83 per bushel, was down 11 cents from March but increased $2.23 from last year. Hay averaged $144.00 per ton, up $23.00 from March and $22.00 more than April 2007. Oats averaged $3.47 per bushel, up 24 cents from last month and up $1.19 from April 2007. Wheat averaged $8.76 per bushel, up 46 cents from last month and $3.92 more than last year. Potatoes, at $12.00 per hundredweight, were up 60 cents from last month and increased 50 cents from March 2007. Fresh Apples at the packing house door were 34.7 cents per pound, 7.3 cents more than last year at this time.

Dairy farmers in the Empire State received an average of $18.00 per hundredweight of milk sold during April, unchanged from March but $1.00 more than April a year ago. Poultry producers received an average of 86.5 cents per dozen eggs sold, down 44.5 cents from March but 24.5 cents higher than last year.

The preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in April, at 144 percent, based on 1990-92=100, decreased 2 points (1.4 percent) from March. The Crop Index is unchanged but the Livestock Index decreased 4 points (3.1 percent). Producers received lower commodity prices for eggs, strawberries, cattle, and wheat. Higher prices were received for corn, lettuce, onions, and soybeans. In addition to prices, the overall index is also affected by the seasonal change based on a 3-year average mix of commodities producers sell. Increased monthly marketings of cattle, strawberries, milk, and oranges offset decreased marketings of soybeans, corn, wheat, and cotton.
