New York's PEACH
CROP is forecast at 13.0 million pounds, up 8
percent from the 12.0 million pounds produced last year. U.S. peach production,
excluding California Clingstones that are mostly canned, is expected to
total 1.48 billion pounds, 3 percent less than last year but 1 percent
more than 1999.
New York's 2001 TART
CHERRY production, forecast late-June, is expected
to total 13.0 million pounds, down 22 percent from the previous year.
SWEET CHERRY
production is forecast at 1000 tons, up 11 percent from a year ago.

APPLES PROCESSED IN
NEW YORK DOWN 26 PERCENT
New York State
processing plants utilized 427 million pounds of apples from the 2000 crop,
down 26 percent from the 575 million pounds processed from the 1999 crop.
Apples shipped into New York for processing totaled 37.3 million pounds,
down 25 percent from the 50.0 million pounds received in 1999.
Apples utilized
for cider and juice in New York plants totaled 184 million pounds, down
25 percent from the 244 million pounds utilized from the 1999 crop.
Processing for
canning and applesauce utilized 216 million pounds, down 17 percent from
the 262 million pounds canned from the 1999 crop. Apples used for freezing,
at 30.7 million pounds, were down 39 percent from the 50.2 million pounds
frozen from the 1999 crop. Apples processed for other products totaled
13.0 million pounds, down 29 percent from the 18.2 million pounds utilized
last year.

2000 FINAL APPLE PRODUCTION
DOWN 21 PERCENT
The 2000 New
York apple crop totaled 995 million pounds, 21 percent lower than the 1999
production of 1.26 billion pounds. From the 2000 crop, 475 million pounds
went to processing plants, at an average of $130.00 per ton, while 460
million pounds were sold for fresh market at an average packinghouse door
equivalent of $340 per ton or 17.0 cents per pound. A total of 60 million
pounds was not utilized due mostly to low quality and weather damage.
