New York's PEACH
CROP is forecast at 10.0 million pounds, down
20 percent from the 12.5 million pounds produced last year. U.S. peach
production, excluding California Clingstones that are mostly canned, is
expected to total 1.50 billion pounds, 1 percent more than last year but
2 percent less than 2000.
New York's 2002
TART CHERRY production, forecast late-June,
is expected to total 12.0 million pounds, down 18 percent from the previous
year.
SWEET CHERRY
production is forecast at 500 tons, down 55 percent from a year ago.

APPLES PROCESSED
IN NEW YORK UP 6 PERCENT
New York State
processing plants utilized 472 million pounds of apples from the 2001 crop,
up 6 percent from the 444 million pounds processed from the 2000 crop.
Apples shipped into New York for processing totaled 32.8 million pounds,
down 12 percent from the 37.3 million pounds received in 2000.
Apples utilized
for cider and juice in New York plants totaled 159 million pounds, down
14 percent from the 184 million pounds utilized from the 2000 crop.
Processing
for canning and applesauce utilized 267 million pounds, up 24 percent
from the 216 million pounds canned from the 2000 crop. Apples used for
freezing, at 31.1 million pounds, were up 1 percent from the 30.7 million
pounds frozen from the 2000 crop. Apples processed for other products
totaled 13.7 million pounds, up 5 percent from the 13.0 million pounds
utilized last year.

2001 FINAL
APPLE PRODUCTION UP 1 PERCENT
The 2001 New
York apple crop totaled 1.00 billion pounds, 1 percent higher than the
2000 production of 995 million pounds. From the 2001 crop, 520 million
pounds went to processing plants, at an average of $133.00 per ton, while
420 million pounds were sold for fresh market at an average packinghouse
door equivalent of $368 per ton or 18.4 cents per pound. A total of 60
million pounds was not utilized due mostly to low quality and weather damage.
