GRAPES
In
the first forecast of the season New York grape production is expected
to total 131,000 tons, down 15 percent from a year ago and 36 percent below
1999, according to the New York Agricultural Statistics Service. Dry conditions
have decreased pressure from mildews and insects, but some vineyards are
showing stress from the near drought conditions.
Nationally,
grape production is forecast at 6.48 million tons, 15 percent below 2000.
Smaller crops are forecast in California, Michigan and New York, while
Washington expects a larger crop. Production of all grapes in California,
the leading grape producing state, is expected to total 5.90 million tons,
16 percent below last year's crop.

APPLES
Based
on grower reports as of August 1, New York apple production is expected
to total 1.05 billion pounds, up 6 percent from the 995 million pounds
produced in 2000 but down 17 percent from 1999. Overall, New York apple
growers are predicting an average crop. Some hail damage occurred in the
Hudson Valley Memorial Day weekend and Western New York needs rain to size
the fruit, but overall the crop looks good.
