On August 1, the crop was responding to much needed rainfall and was showing improvement each day.

Alfalfa dry hay production is estimated at 1.46 milllion tons, 7 percent below 2001. All other dry hay, at 2.88 million tons, is up 45 percent from last year. Oat production is estimated at 3.85 million bushels, down 30 percent from a year ago. Soybean output is projected to total 5.05 million bushels, down 3 percent from 2001.

U.S. CORN, SOYBEAN PRODUCTION DOWN

U.S. grain corn production is forecast at 8.89 billion bushels, down 7 percent from last year and 10 percent below 2000. Yields are expected to average 125.2 bushels per acre, down 13.0 bushels from last year. If realized, this would be the lowest production since 1995.

Soybean production is forecast at 2.63 billion bushels, down 9 percent from 2001. Yields are expected to average 36.5 bushels per acre, down 3.1 bushels from a year earlier. If realized, this would be the lowest production since 1996.

JULY PRICES RECEIVED MIXED

Prices received by New York farmers during July were mixed compared with a month earlier. Prices for corn, oats, and soybeans increased while wheat, hay, milk and egg prices declined.

Grain corn prices averaged $2.54 per bushel, up 1 cent from June and 6 cents above July 2001. Oats, at $2.05 per bushel, were up 12 cents from a month earlier and 62 cents above a year ago. Wheat, at $2.85 per bushel, was down 40 cents from June but 52 cents above last July. Soybeans returned $5.33 per bushel, 86 cents above last month and 75 cents more than July 2001. Hay prices averaged $109.00 per ton baled, $3.00 below June and $7.00 less than July a year ago.

Dairy farmers in New York received an average of $11.60 per hundredweight of milk sold during July, down 90 cents from a month earlier and $5.40 below last July. The price of milk cow herd replacements averaged $1,600 per head compared with $1,500 during July 2001. Poultry producers received an average of 48.5 cents per dozen eggs sold, down 1.9 cents from June but 3.2 cents more than a year earlier.

At the National level, the preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in July was 100, based on 1990-92=100, up 2 points from the June index. Higher prices for wheat, soybeans, hogs, and corn more than offset decreased prices for broilers, milk, eggs, and cattle. The seasonal change in the mix of commodities farmers sell often affects the overall index. Higher marketings for grapes, wheat, tobacco, and tomatoes more than offset decreased marketings of milk, cantaloupe, potatoes, and asparagus. The All Farm Products Index was 8 points below July last year. Lower prices for broilers, cattle, hogs, and strawberries more than offset higher prices for wheat, corn, soybeans, and potatoes.

JULY MILK PRODUCTION UP 4 PERCENT

Milk production in the Empire State during July totaled 1.07 billion pounds, up 4 percent from the 1.02 billion pounds of milk produced in New York during July 2001. Both a larger milking herd and a higher output of milk per cow contributed to the increase. The 680,000 dairy cows on farms during July were up 1 percent from a year earlier. Milk per cow averaged 1,570 pounds during the month, up 50 pounds from the July 2001 output.

July milk production in the 20 major producing States totaled 12.3 billion pounds, up 2.3 percent from production in these same States during July 2001. Production per cow in the 20 major States averaged 1,580 pounds for July, 28 pounds above a year earlier. The number of cows on farms was 7.79 million head, 40,000 head more than July 2001, and 7,000 head more than June 2002.
