NEW YORK CROP

AND LIVESTOCK REPORT

Released: August 2005

NEW YORK CROP FORECASTS - AUGUST 1

New York grain corn production is forecast at 54.6 million bushels, down 10 percent from last year. Area for harvest is expected to total 455 thousand acres, 9 percent below a year ago. Yield is forecast at 120 bushels per acre, down 2 bushels from 2004. The crop was developing well due to warm temperatures and adequate moisture.

All dry hay production is expected to total 2.67 million tons, down 9 percent from 2004. Production of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures, at 990 thousand tons, is 25 percent below 2004. Other dry hay production is expected to total 1.68 million tons, up 5 percent from a year ago. Oat production, expected to total 4.80 million bushels, is 48 percent above a year ago. Soybean production is estimated at 7.09 million bushels, up 6 percent from 2004.

U.S. CORN, SOYBEAN PRODUCTION DOWN

Corn production is forecast at 10.3 billion bushels, down 12 percent from last year. Based on conditions as of August 1, yields are expected to average 139.2 bushels per acre, down 21.2 bushels from the record high last year. With the exception of Michigan, forecast yields are lower in all of the Corn Belt States as warm, dry weather throughout the growing season depleted soil moisture levels and stressed the crop. The largest decreases occurred in Missouri, Illinois, and Kansas. Farmers expect to harvest 74.4 million acres of corn for grain, unchanged from June but up 1 percent from 2004.

Soybean production is forecast at 2.79 billion bushels, down 11 percent from 2004 but up 14 percent from 2003. Based on August 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 38.7 bushels per acre, down 3.8 bushels from the record high U.S. yield set last year. Yields are lower than 2004 across most of the country, with the exceptions being Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Carolina, and Wisconsin. Area for harvest, at 72.2 million acres, has declined slightly from June and is down 2 percent from 2004.
