MUCKLAND VEGETABLES
Onion, Lettuce Acreage Up; Field Corn, Potatoes, Turfgrass Down
The 2006 Muckland Survey, which was conducted in New York’s five major muckland vegetable areas, showed a slight increase in muckland utilized for crops, up to 30,408 acres this year. Across the state, onion acreage increased from 9,268 acres in 2004 to 9,764 acres in 2006. Total potato acreage is 1,193 in 2006. Acreage not planted at the time of the survey (July 10-21) increased 25 percent from 2004.
In the Orange County mucklands, which include Chester and outlying areas, acreage planted to onions (seed, sets, and transplants) dropped 6 percent, down to 3,704 acres. Turfgrass, the second major acreage in Orange County, decreased 2 percent to 2,782 acres. The acres not planted at the time of the survey (July 10-21) increased 55 percent. This was due in part to the lateness of this years planting. Other crops which showed a decrease are carrots, field corn, and potatoes. Sweet corn and lettuce increased.
Oswego County onion acreage showed a 4 percent decrease from 2004 to 2,197 acres. Acres that were not planted increased 39 percent to 1,156 acres.
In Orleans and Genesee Counties, onion acreage increased 14 percent from 2004 and field corn acreage jumped 43 percent. Carrot acreage equaled 106 acres. Acreage not planted by the survey completion date was 608 acres, 31 percent less than in 2004.
Madison and Oneida County mucklands onion acreage increased from 22 acres in 2004 to 308 acres in 2006. Field corn acreage dropped from 659 to 278 acres.
The Ontario, Steuben, and Yates Counties muck region experienced a big increase in potato acreage from 291 acres in 2004 to 467 acres in 2006. Onion acreage increased to 773 acres in 2006.
