MUCKLAND VEGETABLES

Onion, Sweet Corn Acreage Down; Field Corn, Turfgrass Up

The 2004 Muckland Survey, which was conducted in New York's five major muckland vegetable areas, showed a slight increase in muckland utilized for crops, up to 28,918 acres this year. Across the state, onion acreage decreased from 9,592 acres in 2002 to 9,268 acres in 2004. Total potato acreage is 1,435 in 2004. Acreage not planted at the time of the survey (July 12-30) increased 28 percent from 2002.

In the Orange County mucklands, which include Chester and outlying areas, acreage planted to onions (seed, sets, and transplants) dropped 3 percent, down to 3,957 acres. Turfgrass, the second major acreage in Orange County, decreased 5 percent to 2,826 acres. The acres not planted at the time of the survey (July 12-30) increased 76 percent. This may be due in part to the lateness of this years planting. Other crops which showed a decrease are sweet corn, carrots, lettuce, field corn, and potatoes.

Oswego County onion acreage showed a 5 percent increase from 2002 to 2,281 acres. Acres that were not planted decreased 15 percent to 829 acres.

In Orleans and Genesee Counties, onion acreage increased 7 percent from 2002 and potato acreage jumped 8 percent. Carrot acreage equaled 70 acres. Acreage not planted by the survey completion date was 880 acres, 11 percent less than last year.

Madison and Oneida County mucklands onion acreage decreased from 348 acres in 2002 to 22 acres in 2004. Field corn acreage jumped from 488 to 659 acres.

The Ontario, Steuben, and Yates Counties muck region experienced a big increase in potato acreage from 153 acres in 2002 to 291 acres in 2004. Onion acreage dipped to 566 acres in 2004.
