NEW YORK CROP
AND LIVESTOCK REPORT
Based on conditions as of September 1, New York grain corn production is now expected to total 44.1 million bushels, 22 percent less than the 56.7 million bushels produced in 2001. Acreage for harvest is estimated at 450,000 acres, down 20,000 acres from the August forecast and 17 percent below the 540,000 acres harvested for grain last year. Due to extreme hot temperatures and lack of moisture during the majority of the growing season, many growers diverted grain acreage and chopped for silage while there was still some moisture left in the plants. Yields are expected to average 98 bushels per acre, down 5 bushels from the August forecast and 7 bushels less than a year earlier. U.S. grain corn production is forecast at 8.85 billion bushels, down less than 1 percent from last month and down 7 percent from 2001.
Soybean production in the Empire
State is now forecast at 4.90 million bushels, down 6 percent from the 5.21
million bushels produced in 2001. Acreage for harvest is expected to total 153,000
acres, unchanged from the August forecast. Yields are expected to average 32
bushels per acre, down 1 bushel from the August forecast and 1 bushel below
a year earlier. U.S. soybean production is forecast at 2.66 billion bushels,
up 1 percent from August but 8 percent below 2001. Yields are expected to average
37.0 bushels per acre, up 0.5 bushel from last month. If realized, this would
be the lowest production since 1999. Acreage for harvest is forecast at 71.8
million acres, down slightly from August and 2 percent below last year.

Prices received by New York farmers during August for selected commodities were mostly higher compared with a month earlier. Prices for corn, oats, wheat, barley, and eggs increased while prices for soybeans and hay declined. Wholesale milk prices were unchanged from July.
Grain corn prices averaged $2.86 per bushel, up 24 cents from July and 41 cents above July 2001. Oats, at $1.71 per bushel, were up 8 cents from a month earlier and 32 cents above a year ago. Wheat, at $3.18 per bushel, was up 19 cents from July and 73 cents above last August. Barley prices averaged $1.73 per bushel, up 10 cents from the previous month. Soybeans returned $5.47 per bushel, down 20 cents from July but 36 cents more than August a year ago. Hay prices averaged $101.00 per ton baled, $8.00 below a month earlier and $3.00 less than August 2001.
Dairy farmers in New York received an average of $12.10 per hundredweight of milk sold during August, unchanged from a month earlier but $5.30 below last August. Poultry producers received an average of 53.5 cents per dozen eggs sold, up 5.0 cents from July and 6.0 cents more than a year earlier.
At the National level, the preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in August was 101, based on 1990-92=100, up 1 point from the July index. Higher prices for corn, wheat, strawberries, and lettuce more than offset decreased prices for hogs, broilers, grapes, and potatoes. The seasonal change in the mix of commodities farmers sell often affects the overall index. Higher marketings for tobacco, cattle, grapes, and sweet corn more than offset decreased marketings of wheat, hay, milk, and strawberries. The current All Farm Products Index is 9 points below August 2001. Lower prices for broilers, hogs, cattle, and lettuce more than offset higher prices for corn, wheat, soybeans, and grapes.

Milk production in the Empire State during August totaled 1.03 billion pounds, up 3 percent from the 996 million pounds of milk produced in New York during August 2001. Both a larger milking herd and a higher output of milk per cow contributed to the increase. The 677,000 dairy cows on farms during August were up 1 percent from a year earlier. Milk per cow averaged 1,520 pounds during the month, up 40 pounds from the August 2001 output.
August milk production in the 20 major producing States totaled 12.2 billion pounds, up 3.8 percent from production in these same States during August 2001. Production per cow in the 20 major States averaged 1,568 pounds for August, 48 pounds above a year earlier. The number of cows on farms was 7.79 million head, 51,000 head more than August 2001, and 3,000 head more than July 2002.

Egg production on New York farms, totaled 91 million eggs in July 2002, down 8 percent from the same month a year earlier. The decrease was the result of fewer layers and a lower rate of lay. The number of hens and pullets of laying age, at 3.82 million, was down 8 percent from July 2001, while the rate of lay was down less than 1 percent to 23.85 eggs per layer.
Laying flocks in the United States produced 7.34 billion eggs during July 2002, up 2 percent from the previous July. An indication of future egg supply, chicks hatched in the U.S. during July for the purpose of egg production totaled 35.2 million, down 9 percent from July 2001. Eggs in incubators on August 1, 2002 totaled 33.2 million, up 11 percent from the August 1, 2001 total.
