E-mail: nass-ny@nass.usda.gov (518) 457-5570 VEGETABLE REPORT September 2009 Seasonal No. 984-4-09 U.S. CONTRACTED PROCESSING PRODUCTION UP 14 PERCENT FROM LAST YEAR The 2009 contracted processing vegetable production for the four major processing crops (snap beans, sweet corn, green peas, and tomatoes) is forecast at 18.5 million tons, up 14 percent from last year. Production of processing tomatoes, at 14.1 million tons, is 16 percent above 2008. Snap bean production, at 806,920 tons, is up 2 percent from last year’s production. Sweet corn production, at 3.16 million tons, is up 13 percent from last year. Green pea production, at 400,920 tons, is 3 percent below 2008. Contracted area for harvest of the four major processing vegetable crops, at 1.12 million acres, is 6 percent above 2008. Sweet Corn: Contracted sweet corn production is forecast at 3.16 million tons, up 13 percent from last year. An increase of 9 percent in contracted harvested area is accompanied by an increase in yield of 0.37 ton per acre from 2008. In Minnesota, favorable weather conditions allowed planting to proceed on schedule. Planting was nearly complete by the end of June. Harvest was reported as 16 percent complete as of August 16. In Washington, conditions were mostly hot and dry during the early summer season. However, water supplies are reported as adequate and the crop is also reported to be in good condition. Oregon's sweet corn crop is reported to be in good condition. In Wisconsin, harvest was delayed due to cool temperatures. Snap Beans: Contracted production of snap beans is forecast at 806,920 tons, up 2 percent from last year. Contracted harvested area is down 1 percent, but yield is up 0.10 tons per acre. In Oregon, the snap bean crop was reported in good condition. In West Central Michigan, dry weather throughout July led to many fields being irrigated. However, stands were reported to be in good condition. In Illinois, planting was delayed due to sporadic rainfall across the State. In Indiana, the snap bean crop was reported to be in good condition. In Minnesota, harvest was delayed due to unseasonably cool summer temperatures and limited rainfall during the growing season. In New York, excessive rainfall accompanied by cool nights resulted in reduced yields. In Wisconsin, snap beans are progressing at a slow pace due to cool temperatures.
