NEW YORK CORN PRODUCTION INCREASES
Based on conditions as of October 1, New York grain corn production is estimated at 66.4 million bushels, up 7 percent from last year’s crop due to more acres for harvest. Yields are expected to average 123 bushels per acre, down 6 bushels from last year’s record high yield. Acreage for harvest is expected to total 540 thousand acres, up 13 percent from the 480 thousand acres harvested for grain in 2006. Nationally, grain corn production is forecast at 13.3 billion bushels, up slightly from last month and 26 percent above 2006. Yields are expected to average 154.7 bushels per acre, down 1.1 bushels from September but 5.6 bushels above last year. If realized, this would be the second largest yield on record behind the 160.4 bushel yield in 2004. Based on administrative information, acreage updates were made in several states bringing total corn planted acres to 93.6 million acres, up1 percent from June and 20 percent lower than 2006. Area harvested and to be harvested for grain, at 86.1 million acres, is up1 percent from September and 22 percent higher than last year.
New York soybean production is expected to total 7.71 million bushels, down 15 percent from 2006. Yields are forecast at 38 bushels per acre, down 8 bushels from last year’s record high yield. U.S. soybean output is forecast at 2.60 billion bushels, down less than 1 percent from the September forecast and down 19 percent from the 2006 crop. Based on October 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 41.4 bushels per acre, unchanged from last month but down 1.3 bushels from last year. Acreage updates were made in several States with soybean planted area now at 63.7 million acres, a decrease of less than 1 percent from the June forecast and down 16 percent from 2006. Expected area for harvest, at 62.8 million acres, down less than 1 percent from September and 16 percent from 2006.
New York production of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures, at 880 thousand tons, is up 13 percent from last year. Other dry hay production, which includes clover-timothy, mixed grasses, etc., is forecast at 1.89 million tons, down 6 percent from a year ago. All dry hay production for the nation is forecast at 148 million tons, up 4 percent from last year.
Dry bean production for the Empire State is expected to total 196 thousand hundredweight (cwt.), 18 percent below a year earlier. Yields are expected to average 1,200 pounds per acre, down 130 pounds from 2006. Nationally, dry edible bean production is forecast at 25.3 million cwt for 2007, up 6 percent from the August forecast and 4 percent above last year. Harvested acreage is forecast at 1.46 million acres, 2 percent above the August forecast but 5 percent below last year. The average U.S. yield is forecast at 1,727 pounds per acre, an increase of 78 pounds from the August forecast and 150 pounds above last year. Planted acres are estimated at 1.53 million acres, an increase of 1 percent from earlier forecasts but a 6 percent decrease from 2006.
