New York Net Farm Income decreased 9 percent in 2000 to $609 million. Livestock output value decreased 9 percent to $1.87 billion and crop output value increased 3 percent to $1.16 billion. Consumption outlays decreased 2 percent to $1.74 billion while direct government payments increased 33 percent.
The value-added format is used to present the income accounts, replacing the traditional net farm income format. The underlying accounting concepts are the same under both formats and the value for net farm income is identical.

Prices received by New York farmers during September for selected agricultural products were mixed compared with a month earlier. Prices for oats, soybeans, hay, and eggs were lower while prices for wheat, potatoes, and wholesale milk increased. Corn prices were unchanged.
Grain corn prices averaged $2.45 per bushel, unchanged from August but 30 cents above September 2000. Oats, at $1.34 per bushel, were down 5 cents from a month earlier and 11 cents below a year ago. Wheat sold during the month averaged $2.49 per bushel, up 5 cents from August and 47 cents above September a year ago. Hay, at $94.00 per ton baled, was $10.00 below both last month and a year earlier. Potato prices increased 20 cents from the previous month to $10.70 per hundredweight (cwt.). Prices for 2001 crop apples for fresh market consumption averaged $13.60 per cwt., down $7.60 from September 2000.
Dairy farmers in the Empire State received an average of $17.60 per cwt. of milk sold during September, up 20 cents from a month earlier and $4.00 above last September. Poultry producers received an average of 45.2 cents per dozen eggs sold during the month, down 2.3 cents from August and 8.4 cents less than a year earlier.
At the National level, the Preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by U.S. Farmers was 106 based on 1990-92=100, down 3 points from the August Index. Higher prices for lettuce, milk, broilers, and wheat were partially offset by lower prices for hogs, soybeans, strawberries, and cattle. The seasonal change in the mix of commodities farmers sell often affects the overall index. Lower seasonal marketings of cattle, broilers, wheat, and milk were partially offset by higher marketings of soybeans, peanuts, corn, and potatoes. Compared with September 2000, the Index was 9 points higher. Price increases from September 2000 for milk, corn, broilers, and cattle were partially offset by lower prices for cotton, apples, tomatoes, and turkeys.

New York dairy herds produced 945 million pounds of milk during September, down 1.2 percent from the September 2000 level. The decrease was the result of fewer cows. The number of milk cows totaled 670,000, down 8,000 head from September of the previous year. Milk per cow averaged 1,410 pounds, unchanged from September 2000.
Milk production in the 20 major states during September totaled 11.4 billion pounds, down 0.7 percent from production in these same states during September 2000. Production per cow averaged 1,471 pounds for September, 7 pounds above September 2000. The number of cows on farms in the 20 major states was 7.73 million head, 91,000 head less than September 2000, and 8,000 head less than August 2001.

Egg production on farms across New York State in August totaled 96 million eggs, unchanged from a year earlier. An increase in the number of layers was offset by a lower egg laying rate.
Laying flocks in the United States produced 7.21 billion eggs during August 2001, up 1 percent from the 7.10 billion produced a year ago. An indication of future egg supply, egg-type chicks hatched in the U.S. during August were up 2 percent from August 2000. The 33.4 million eggs in incubators on September 1, 2001 were down 3 percent from a year ago.
