NEW YORK CROP
AND LIVESTOCK REPORT

Released: October 2004

Monthly

No. 973-10-04

NEW YORK SMALL GRAINS - 2004 SUMMARY

Production of winter wheat, oats and barley decreased from a year ago. Lower production was primarily due to decreased acres for harvest. Winter wheat production totaled 5.30 million bushels, down 17 percent from the 6.36 million bushels produced in 2003. Yields averaged 53 bushels per acre, the same as the 2003 crop. Oat production, at 3.25 million bushels, decreased 26 percent from the 4.41 million bushels produced last year. Production of barley in New York totaled 530,000 bushels, down 12 percent from a year ago. Acreage for harvest at 10,000 acres, was down 23 percent.

United States production of winter wheat totaled 2.16 billion bushels in 2004, up 2 percent from the last forecast but 8 percent below 2003. U.S. oat production is estimated at 117 million bushels, 9 percent below the August 1 forecast and 19 percent below last year's 144 million bushels. Barley production is estimated at 280 million bushels, up 3 percent from the August 1 forecast and up 1 percent from last year.

NEW YORK CORN, SOYBEAN PRODUCTION INCREASES

New York soybean production is expected to total 6.23 million bushels, up 29 percent from 2003. Yields are forecast at 36 bushels per acre, 3 bushels above last year. U.S. soybean output is forecast at 3.11 billion bushels, up 10 percent from the September forecast and 27 percent above 2003. If realized, this would be the largest crop on record. Yields are expected to average a record high 42.0 bushels per acre, up 3.5 bushels from September.
