NEW YORK SMALL GRAINS  - 2006 SUMMARY

Production of winter wheat and oats increased while barley decreased from a year ago.  Winter wheat production is estimated at 5.80 million bushels, up 13 percent from last year. Yields averaged 61 bushels per acre, up 7 bushels from 2005. Oat production totaled 4.96 million bushels, an increase of 22 percent from last year. Production of barley in New York was estimated at 660,000 bushels, 10 percent below last year's production. Area harvested was 12,000 acres, down 20 percent from a year ago. 

U.S. all wheat production totals 1.81 billion bushels in 2006, up 1 percent from the last forecast but 14 percent below 2005.  Grain area is 46.8 million acres, down 7 percent from last year.  The U.S. yield is 38.7 bushels per acre, up 0.4 bushel from August but down 3.3 bushels from last year.  The level of production and change from last year by type are: winter wheat, 1.30 billion bushels, down 13 percent; other spring wheat, 460 million bushels, down 9 percent; Durum wheat, 53.5 million bushels, down 47 percent.

 

NEW YORK CORN PRODUCTION DECREASES, SOYBEAN INCREASE

New York grain corn production is estimated at 55.4 million bushels, down 3 percent from last year’s crop due to less acres for harvest. Yields are expected to average 123 bushels per acre, down 1 bushel from last year’s record high yield. Acreage for harvest is expected to total 450 thousand acres, down 2 percent from the 460 thousand acres harvested for grain in 2005.

New York soybean production is expected to total a record high 8.32 million bushels, up 5 percent from 2005. Yields are forecast at 42 bushels per acre, equal to last year.

NET FARM INCOME INCREASED 21 PERCENT

New York net farm income increased  21  percent in 2005 to $1.11 billion.  The value of  livestock production increased 5 percent to $2.31 billion and the value of crop  output decreased 1 percent to $1.29  billion. 

The value of purchased inputs decreased 7 percent to $1.75  billion while the value of direct government payments increased 74 percent to $143 million.
