No. 984-3-05

NEW YORK ONION PRODUCTION DOWN 37 PERCENT

New York=s onion crop for 2005 is forecast at 3.30 million hundredweight (cwt.), down 37 percent from last year=s crop of 5.20 million cwt., according to Steve Ropel, Director of USDA=s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Office.  Even though the condition of the onions remained good throughout the summer, the hot dry summer resulted in smaller than normal onions, bringing the expected yield down drastically from last year=s yield of 400 cwt.  The expected yield of 260 cwt. per acre would be the lowest since 2002.

Summer storage onion production is forecast at 49.7 million hundredweight, down 14 percent from last year.  Storage onion harvested area is forecast at 103,620 acres, down 5 percent from 2004.  California production, at 11.6 million hundredweight, is 6 percent below 2004.  Harvested area is expected to be 27,500 acres, down 4 percent from last year.
