NEW YORK CROP
AND LIVESTOCK REPORT
New York grain corn production is forecast at 55.6 million bushels, up 18 percent from last year's output. Production rose due to increases in both the number of acres harvested and yield per acre. Acreage for harvest is expected to total 540 thousand acres, up 13 percent from a year earlier. Yields are expected to average 103 bushels per acre, 5 bushels more than in 2000. U.S. corn production is forecast at 9.55 billion bushels, up 1 percent from October but down 4 percent from 2000. Based on conditions as of November 1, yields are expected to average 138.0 bushels per acre, up 1.7 bushels from October. If realized, this would be the fourth largest production and second highest yield on record. Yield prospects in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Wisconsin remained high despite heavy October precipitation that slowed harvest.
Soybean production in New York is forecast at 4.69 million bushels, up 8 percent from last year. Acreage harvested for beans is expected to total 138 thousand acres, up 5 percent from a year earlier. Yields are expected to average 34.0 bushels per acre, up 1 bushel from 2000. U.S. soybean production is forecast at a record high 2.92 billion bushels, up 1 percent from October 1, and 6 percent above 2000. Based on November 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 39.4 bushels per acre, up 0.2 bushel from last month and 1.3 bushels above 2000. Acreage for harvest is estimated at a record 74.1 million acres, unchanged from last month but up 2 percent from 2000. Yield increases in the Great Plains and Mississippi Valley more than offset yield decreases in the northern mid-Atlantic States and Ohio.

Production of fall potatoes in New York for 2001 is estimated at 5.94 million hundredweight (cwt.), down fractionally from a year ago. Yields are expected to average 255 cwt. per acre, compared with 280 cwt. per acre last year. This would be the lowest yield since 1991. Acreage for harvest is estimated at 23.3 thousand acres, up 9 percent from a year earlier.
U.S. FALL POTATO DOWN
U.S. production of fall potatoes for 2001 is forecast at 401 million cwt., down 14 percent from last year and the smallest crop since 1993. Area harvested, at 1.09 million acres, is down 8 percent from last year. The average yield is forecast at 367 cwt. per acre, a drop of 25 cwt. from a year earlier. After a record high production last year, the fall potato crop is smaller in 20 of the 22 fall producing States. Only Indiana and Massachusetts have larger crops this year.

Prices received by New York farmers during October for selected agricultural commodities were mostly higher compared with a month earlier. Prices for corn, oats, wheat, hay, apples, and eggs increased while prices for soybeans, potatoes, and milk declined.
Grain corn prices averaged $2.44 per bushel, up 22 cents from September and 24 cents above October 2000. Oats, at $1.40 per bushel, were up 7 cents from a month earlier and 6 cents above a year ago. Wheat averaged $2.61 per bushel, up 12 cents from September and 81 cents above last October. Soybeans returned $4.38 per bushel, down 43 cents from a month earlier. Hay prices averaged $100.00 per ton baled, up $6.00 from September but $20.00 less than October 2000. Potato prices declined 30 cents from a month earlier, averaging $10.40 per hundredweight (cwt.). Prices for fresh market apples at the packinghouse door averaged $19.70 per cwt., up $6.10 from September but 60 cents less than a year ago.
Empire State dairy farmers received an average of $17.40 per cwt. of milk sold during October, down 40 cents from the previous month but $3.90 above last October. Dairy herd replacements returned an average of $1,600.00 per head compared with $1,250.00 in October 2000. Poultry producers received an average of 48.8 cents per dozen eggs sold during the month, up 3.6 cents from September but 13.0 cents less than a year earlier.
At the National level, the preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in October was 95 based on 1990-92=100, down a record 10 points (9.5 percent) from the September Index. When compared to the historical base of 1910-1914, the index shows a 66 point decline, becoming the largest month-to-month decrease in recorded history. The previous record one-month decline was 57 points, and occurred between the months of August and September, 1973. A significant downturn in prices for lettuce, milk, soybeans, hogs, corn, broilers, and cattle combined with seasonal shifts in marketing set the stage for the monthly downturn in the index. When compared with October 2000, however, the Index was still 2 points higher. Price increases from October 2000 for milk, broilers, feed grains, fruits, and potatoes more than offset decreases in oilseeds, cotton, vegetables, and eggs.

New York dairy herds produced 978 million pounds of milk during October, up 1.5 percent from the October 2000 level. The increase was the result of a larger rate per cow. The number of milk cows totaled 670,000, down 4,000 head from October of the previous year. Milk per cow averaged 1,460 pounds, up 2 percent from October 2000.
Milk production in the 20 major states during October totaled 11.8 billion pounds, down 0.2 percent from production in these same states during October 2000. Production per cow averaged 1,526 pounds for October, 15 pounds above October 2000. The number of cows on farms in the 20 major states was 7.72 million head, 95,000 head less than October 2000, and 1,000 head less than September 2001.

Egg production on farms across New York State in September totaled 93 million eggs, unchanged from a year earlier. An increase in the egg laying rate was offset by a lower number of layers.
Laying flocks in the United States produced 7.04 billion eggs during September 2001, up 3 percent from the 6.85 billion produced a year ago. An indication of future egg supply, egg type chicks hatched in the U.S. during September totaled 36.6 million, up 1 percent from a year earlier. The 32.3 million eggs in incubators on October 1, 2001, were up 5 percent from a year ago.
