NEW YORK FALL POTATO PRODUCTION UP, U.S. DOWN
New York production of fall potatoes for 2005 is estimated at 5.23 million hundredweight (cwt.) , up 1 percent from a year ago.
U.S. production of fall potatoes for 2005 is forecast at 383 million cwt, virtually unchanged from last month but down 7 percent from last year for comparable States. Indiana was dropped from the program in 2005. Area harvested, at 952,300 acres, is up less than 1 percent from November but 7 percent below last year. The average yield is forecast at a record high 402 cwt per acre, unchanged from last month but 1 cwt above the previous record set last year.
Western States production is forecast at 268 million cwt, up less than 1 percent from the November forecast but down 5 percent from last year. Acreage harvested, at 600,400 acres, decreased 7 percent from last year but the average yield of 446 cwt per acre is up 8 cwt from 2004. Growing conditions through out the Western States were generally favorable.
Central States production is forecast at 90. 1 million cwt, down less than 1 percent from the November forecast and 10 percent below last year for comparable States. Harvested area, estimated at 261,400 acres, is up less than 1 percent from November but 7 percent below a year ago for comparable States. Average yields, at 345 cwt per acre, are down 1 cwt from last month and 10 cwt below a year ago.
Eastern States production is forecast at 24.5 million cwt, virtually unchanged from the November forecast but down 12 percent from last year. Area for harvest totaled 90,500 acres, unchanged from last month but 4 percent below last year. Average yield, at 271 cwt per acre, is unchanged from November but 23 cwt below last season. New York growers expect a 1 percent increase in production and a 4 percent increase is expected in Pennsylvania from the previous season.

NEW YORK DRY BEAN PRODUCTION UP
Dry bean production in New York for the 2005 crop totaled 282,000 hundredweight (cwt), up 14 percent from last year’s production but 37 percent below the output of the 2003 crop. Harvested acreage, at 23,000 acres was down 2 percent from last year and 4 percent below 2003. Yields averaged 1,230 pounds per acre compared with 1,050 pounds per acre in 2004.
Light red kidney bean production in the state is estimated at 134,000 cwt. compared with 128,000 cwt. in 2004. Production came from 12,200 acres harvested. Light red kidney beans accounted for 48 percent of the total dry bean production in New York, down 4 points from last year. Dark red kidney bean production in estimated at 10,000 cwt. compared with 15,000 cwt. in 2004. Black turtle bean production is set at 128,000 cwt., up 38 percent from the 93,000 cwt. produced a year earlier. Production of all other varieties totaled 10,000 cwt. compared with 11,000 cwt. a year ago.
Nationally, dry edible bean production is forecast at 27.2 million cwt for 2005, up 4 percent from the October forecast and 53 percent above last year. Harvested acreage is forecast at 1.57 million acres, 3 percent above the last forecast and up 29 percent from 2004. The average U.S. yield is forecast at 1,731 pounds per acre, an increase of 16 pounds from the October forecast and 272 pounds above a year ago. Production is above a year ago in 16 of the 17 producing States. Most notable production increases from last year are Minnesota up 111 percent, Colorado 91 percent higher, and North Dakota increasing 82 percent. Production is up from a year ago for large lima, baby lima, navy, great northern, pinto, light red kidney, dark red kidney, pink, small red, blackeye, and small and large chickpeas. Production decreased from last year for small white, cranberry, and black.

U.S. HIRED WORKERS DOWN 4 PERCENT
WAGE RATES UP 3 PERCENT FROM A YEAR AGO
There were 1,129,000 hired workers on the Nation’s farms and ranches during the week of October 9-15, 2005, down 4 percent from a year ago. Of these hired workers, 840,000 workers were hired directly by farm operators. Agricultural service employees on farms and ranches made up the remaining 289,000 workers.
Farm operators paid their hired workers an average wage of $9.61 per hour during the October 2005 reference week, up 29 cents from a year earlier. Field workers received an average of $8.90 per hour, up 28 cents from last October, while livestock workers earned $9.14 per hour compared with $8.91 a year earlier. The field and livestock worker combined wage rate, at $8.96 per hour, was up 27 cents from last year.

NOVEMBER PRICES DECREASED
Prices received by New York producers during November for selected commodities were decreased from a month earlier. The price of corn, wheat, soybeans, hay, apples and milk decreased. The price of potatoes and eggs increased. Many previous month prices were revised due to more complete sales information.
Grain corn, at $2.01 per bushel, decreased 10 cents from October and 43 cents from last year. Wheat averaged $3.18 per bushel, 13 cents less than October but 81 cents more than November 2004. Hay averaged $109.00 per ton, $8.00 less than October and $7.00 less than November 2004. Soybeans, at $5.25 per bushel, were 1 cent less than last month but 6 cents more than last year. Fresh market apple prices at the packinghouse door averaged 26.80 cents per pound this month, 1.60 cents less than October but 4.50 cents more than November 2004. Potatoes averaged $12.90 per hundredweight, 40 cents more than October and $5.50 more than November a year ago.
Dairy farmers in the Empire State received an average of $15.80 per hundredweight of milk sold during November, down 10 cents from October and $1.00 from November a year ago. Poultry producers received an average of 51 cents per dozen eggs sold, up 21 cents from October and 15 cents from November 2004.
The preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in November, at 113, based on 1990-92=100, increased 2 points (1.8 percent) from October. The Crop Index is up 1 point (1.0 percent) while the Livestock Index decreased 1 point (0.8 percent). Producers received higher commodity prices for eggs, oranges, potatoes, cucumbers, and cattle. Lower prices were received for lettuce, dairy, hogs, broilers, and tomatoes. The overall index is also affected by the seasonal change based on a 3-year average mix of commodities producers sell. Increased average marketings of dairy, cattle, cotton, and oranges offset decreased marketings of soybeans, potatoes, peanuts, and sweet corn.

NOVEMBER MILK
PRODUCTION UP 5 PERCENT
New York dairy herds produced 962 million pounds of milk during November. A 5 percent increase in milk production per cow resulted in the increased total milk production compared to last year. The number of milk cows averaged 648,000 head, down 3,000 head from November of the previous year. Milk per cow averaged 1,485 pounds, up 75 pounds from the November 2004 rate.
Milk production in the 23 major States during November totaled 13.0 billion pounds, up 4.6 percent from November 2004. Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,590 pounds for November, 59 pounds above November 2004. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.16 million head, 60,000 head more than November 2004, and 2,000 head more than October 2005.
