While precipitation was welcomed in some districts, planting delays were noted in the northeast district. Warm weather and sunshine were reported as needed for planting and crop development. Frost was reported again in many areas of the state. Post emergence spraying for control of broadleaf weeds and wild oats were both 6 percent complete. Statewide, on average, there were 2.3 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 5 percent short, 87 adequate and 8 surplus. This compared with the five-year (2000-2004) average of 5 percent very short, 12 short, 71 adequate and 12 surplus. FIELD CROPS REPORT Crops: Limited progress was made seeding small grains. Hard red spring wheat was 84 percent seeded, ahead of the average of 64 percent. Durum was 62 percent seeded compared with 38 percent on average. Barley was 82 percent planted. While small grain seeding is ahead of last year, crop emergence was reported behind last year. Spring wheat, barley and oat conditions were rated mostly good. Very little progress was made planting corn, soybeans, dry edible beans, potatoes and sunflower last week. Although limited progress was made planting corn, it was still ahead of average. Soybeans were 19 percent planted compared to 24 percent on average. Canola was 66 percent planted compared to the average of 59 percent. Dry edible peas were 87 percent planted compared with 76 percent last week. LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT Livestock: Ranchers were turning livestock out to pasture and registered beef producers were reported as getting ready to breed cows. Range and pasture conditions were 4 percent very poor, 12 poor, 44 fair, 36 good and 4 excellent. Stockwater supply was rated 1 percent very short, 16 short, 80 adequate and 3 surplus. Overnight lows dropped into the 20s to mid-30s. Sunny skies finished out the weekend, with highs warming into the 50s east to near 70 degrees in the west. Outlook, May 16-22: Spring-like weather will be the case for the third week in May. More seasonal temperatures and a chance of showers and thunderstorms midweek will be in store. Fair weather will start out the week, with highs in the mid-50s to low 60s. Look for showers and thunderstorms with possibly heavy rainfall across areas of the west on Tuesday. Storms may become severe across the southern areas late on Tuesday. Showers and thunderstorms will move into the eastern areas on Wednesday.
