Rains over most of the state last week limited planting in many areas. Warm weather and sunshine were reported as needed to maintain planting and crop development progress. Reports were received that the cold and wind were causing stress to sugarbeets. Crops hit with frost damage the past few weeks have started to regrow. Post emergence spraying for control of broadleaf weeds was 12 percent complete and wild oats was 13 percent complete. Statewide, on average, there were 4.1 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 4 percent short, 86 adequate and 10 surplus. This compared with the average of 5 percent very short, 14 short, 71 adequate and 10 surplus. FIELD CROPS REPORT Crops: Limited progress was made seeding small grains despite rains across the state. Hard red spring wheat was 92 percent seeded, ahead of the average of 81 percent. Durum was 74 percent seeded compared with 60 percent on average. Barley was 91 percent planted. Spring wheat and barley were 68 and 63 percent emerged, respectively, both ahead of average. Spring wheat, barley and oat conditions were reported mostly good. Good progress was made planting all other crops last week. While excellent progress was made planting soybeans, it was still behind average. Soybeans were 49 percent planted compared to 19 percent last week and the average of 51 percent. Potatoes were 68 percent planted compared to 69 percent on average. Sunflower was 25 percent planted compared with 8 percent last week. LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT Livestock: Ranchers continued to move livestock to pasture as conditions improved due to the recent precipitation. Range and pasture conditions were 4 percent very poor, 10 poor, 38 fair, 42 good and 6 excellent. Stockwater supply was rated 1 percent very short, 13 short, 82 adequate and 4 surplus.
