nd-crop-weather STATE NORTH DAKOTA CROP, LIVESTOCK & WEATHER REPORT RELEASE DATE, WEEK ENDING DATE Released: June 27, 2005 For Week Ending: June 26, 2005 ISSUE ND-CW2605 AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY General: Warm temperatures during most of the week helped to accelerate crop growth across the state, but rain showers continued to interrupt field operations, according to the North Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Warm, wet and humid conditions were ideal for potential disease growth in all crops across the state. Spraying continued across the state, however, it has slowed in wet areas while creating ruts in fields. Post emergence spraying for control of broadleaf weeds was 86 percent complete and wild oats was 91 percent complete compared to the five-year (2000-2004) average of 78 and 88 percent, respectively. Statewide, on average, there were 5.1 days suitable for fieldwork. The widespread rains increased topsoil moisture supplies, which were rated 2 percent short, 71 adequate and 21 surplus compared to the average of 6 percent very short, 10 short, 69 adequate and 15 surplus. FIELD CROPS REPORT Crops: Above normal temperatures aided small grain development, which was ahead of average. Hard red spring wheat was 85 percent jointed and beyond compared with 74 percent on average, while durum wheat was 64 percent jointed, ahead of average. Barley was 84 percent jointed compared with 73 percent on average. All small grain crop conditions were rated at least 82 percent good to excellent and better than average. As of June 26, 85 percent of the durum wheat was rated in good to excellent condition compared to 51 percent last year. Other crop development was favorably affected by the warm conditions. Canola, dry edible peas and flaxseed made the most progress, however, dry edible beans, soybeans and sunflower still lag behind average. Eighty-four percent of the canola was in the rosette stage compared to 78 percent average and gained 33 percentage points last week. Flaxseed gained 15 percentage points during the week to 16 percent bloomed. Dry edible peas were 34 percent flowered. Other crop conditions deteriorated from the previous week, except for dry edible beans, potatoes and sugarbeets. LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT Livestock: The first cutting of alfalfa was 10 percentage points behind average at 23 percent complete while other hay was 1 percentage point behind average at 11 percent complete. The hay crop condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 24 fair, 54 good and 16 excellent, significantly better when compared to a year ago of 18 percent very poor, 15 poor, 31 fair, 31 good and 5 excellent. In most areas of the state, pasture conditions continued to improve due to rain and warm temperatures. Range and pasture conditions were 1 percent very poor, 4 poor, 19 fair, 54 good and 22 excellent. Stockwater supply was rated 9 percent short, 77 adequate and 14 surplus. The northern and eastern part of the state remained dry, while the south and west received rainfall early on. Thursday evening a cold front ushered in cooler, drier air for the remainder of the week with the exception of Sunday. Ahead of the cooler, drier air was rainfall in the east and a few isolated severe storms that produced strong winds and heavy rain. Another round of warm, muggy air Sunday brought forth more precipitation with severe storms once again bringing damaging winds, hail and heavy rain. Outlook, June 27-July 3: The last week of June will continue the wet weather that has been prevalent across North Dakota for the month. Widely scattered rain showers will be present across the north central through northeast with a chance of thunderstorms in the far southeast on Monday. By late Tuesday, another storm system will bring a good chance for strong thunderstorms and heavy rain statewide. The storms will progress eastward overnight Tuesday and continue through much of the day in the east on Wednesday. Thursday through Saturday should be mostly dry before a cold front moves through Saturday evening bringing another round of thunderstorms statewide late Saturday through Sunday. Daytime temperatures will be below normal with values generally in the 70s Monday through Thursday. By the end of the week, temperatures will be in the low 80s, except for the upper 70s in the northeast and the mid-80s in south central North Dakota. Low temperatures will be near 60 throughout the week.
