nd-crop-weather STATE NORTH DAKOTA CROP, LIVESTOCK & WEATHER REPORT RELEASE DATE, WEEK ENDING DATE Released: May 30, 2006 For Week Ending: May 28, 2006 ISSUE ND-CW2106 AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY General: Above normal temperatures and scattered midweek precipitation aided emerging crops, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. Planting progress for all crops remained ahead of the five-year (2001-2005) average. Reporters indicated spraying was a common activity due to weed pressure. Post emergence spraying for control of broadleaf weeds was 23 percent complete, and spraying for wild oats was 27 percent complete. Statewide, on average, there were 5.3 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 3 percent very short, 20 short, 69 adequate and 8 surplus, compared with the average of 5 percent very short, 15 short, 68 adequate and 12 surplus. FIELD CROPS REPORT Crops: Planting of spring wheat, barley and oats neared completion, at or ahead of last year and the average pace. Durum wheat was 88 percent seeded, a week ahead of average. Emergence of all small grains was ahead of average. Small grain crop conditions were rated mostly good to excellent, but declined from the previous week. Favorable weather allowed producers to make excellent planting progress of all other crops, which was ahead of average. Over half of the dry edible beans were planted during the week. Soybeans, at 81 percent planted, gained 28 percentage points from the previous week. Sunflower planting advanced to 63 percent complete, compared with 45 percent on average. Emergence was ahead of average for all crops. LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT Livestock: Most cattle have been turned out to pasture. Stockwater supplies were rated 1 percent very short, 19 short, 76 adequate and 4 surplus. Pasture and range conditions were rated 1 percent very poor, 8 poor, 39 fair, 44 good and 8 excellent, compared with the average of 4 percent very poor, 15 poor, 38 fair, 37 good and 5 excellent.
