nd-crop-weather STATE NORTH DAKOTA CROP, LIVESTOCK & WEATHER REPORT RELEASE DATE, WEEK ENDING DATE Released: June 5, 2006 For Week Ending: June 4, 2006 ISSUE ND-CW2206 AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY General: Above normal temperatures helped to accelerate crop growth across the state, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. Because of limited precipitation, reporters indicated additional moisture is needed as crops enter critical developmental stages. Spraying continued to be a common activity. Post emergence spraying for control of broadleaf weeds was 44 percent complete, and spraying for wild oats was 50 percent complete. Statewide, on average, there were 6.4 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 7 percent very short, 23 short, 67 adequate and 3 surplus, compared with the five-year (2001-2005) average of 5 percent very short, 15 short, 67 adequate and 13 surplus. FIELD CROPS REPORT Crops: Planting of durum wheat neared completion, one week ahead of average. Emergence of all small grains was similar to last year, but ahead of average. Spring wheat jointed, at 27 percent, was well ahead of last year and average, while durum wheat, at 8 percent, was slightly ahead of last year and average. Small grain crop conditions were rated mostly good to excellent. Favorable weather allowed producers to make good planting progress of all other crops, which was ahead of average. Dry edible beans planted advanced to 95 percent complete, almost two weeks ahead of average. Sunflower planting, at 86 percent complete, gained 23 percentage points from the previous week. Soybean emergence, at 68 percent, was well ahead of last year and average. Emergence was also well ahead of average for all other crops. LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT Livestock: Several reports were received that hay harvest was underway. Reporters indicated concerns over pasture and range conditions, which were rated 4 percent very poor, 20 poor, 27 fair, 41 good and 8 excellent. Stockwater supplies were rated 10 percent very short, 10 short, 75 adequate and 5 surplus.
