nd-crop-weather STATE NORTH DAKOTA CROP, LIVESTOCK & WEATHER REPORT RELEASE DATE, WEEK ENDING DATE Released: June 19, 2006 For Week Ending: June 18, 2006 ISSUE ND-CW2406 AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY General: Dry conditions persisted last week as crops continued to develop rapidly, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. Most areas of the state received only limited amounts of precipitation. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 12 percent very short, 26 short, 60 adequate and 2 surplus, compared with the five-year (2001-2005) average of 5 percent very short, 8 short, 68 adequate and 19 surplus. Statewide, on average, there were 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork. FIELD CROPS REPORT Crops: Reporters indicated additional moisture is still needed as crops progress through critical developmental stages. Small grain crop conditions declined slightly from the previous week and were rated below last year. spring wheat, at 47 percent booted and 18 percent headed, was more than a week ahead of average. Durum wheat booted was 14 percent complete, ahead of last year and average. Development of all other crops continued ahead of last year and average. Post emergence spraying for control of broadleaf weeds was 80 percent complete, and spraying for wild oats was 85 percent complete. LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT Livestock: Pasture and range conditions declined due to depleted soil moisture supplies and were rated 10 percent very poor, 21 poor, 30 fair, 34 good and 5 excellent. Stockwater supplies were rated 11 percent very short, 14 short, 72 adequate and 3 surplus. The first cutting of alfalfa was 25 percent complete, while other hay was 12 percent complete. The hay crop condition was rated 14 percent very poor, 18 poor, 31 fair, 32 good and 5 excellent. Temperatures warmed as the week progressed. High temperatures reached into the upper 80s west to around 80 degrees east on Wednesday. Some showers and thunderstorms moved across the state on Wednesday and into Thursday. Some of the storms reached severe levels across the central parts of the state. Temperatures in the mid and upper 80s along with humid conditions made for a very warm day across the central and east on Thursday, while the west saw temperatures in the 70s. The weekend brought seasonable temperatures across the west along with mainly sunny skies. Warm and muggy conditions were found across the central and east on Saturday. A cold front brought less humid conditions and a few scattered showers in the eastern areas for Father’s Day. Outlook, June 19-25: Seasonal temperatures, low humidity and mostly sunny skies will be found across the state on Monday. There will be an increase in the chances for showers and thunderstorms across the majority of the state on Tuesday. Some areas in the south and west may see severe activity early on Tuesday. Unstable conditions will linger into Wednesday. Temperatures will be fairly seasonal through midweek with highs in the 70s. The second half of the week should see fairly dry conditions across the state with slightly warmer temperatures. Highs will range from the upper 70s north and east to the mid-80s south and central. There will be a slight chance of some thunderstorms over the weekend in the east. Temperatures will be near seasonal normals.
