nd-crop-weather STATE NORTH DAKOTA CROP, LIVESTOCK & WEATHER REPORT RELEASE DATE, WEEK ENDING DATE Released: July 31, 2006 For Week Ending: July 30, 2006 ISSUE ND-CW3006 AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY General: Temperatures were above average during the week as several record highs were set across the state, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. Multiple thunderstorms brought heavy rainfall to isolated locations stretching from central to eastern North Dakota; however, crops in most areas continue to be stressed by drought conditions. Reporters noted that fires are a concern of farmers and ranchers due to continued hot and dry conditions, especially in the southwest and south central districts. It was also noted that producers in the eastern districts were spraying for insects. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 55 percent very short, 35 short and 10 adequate, compared with the five-year (2001-2005) average of 10 percent very short, 23 short, 60 adequate and 7 surplus. Statewide, on average, there were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork. FIELD CROPS REPORT Crops: Harvest continued for all small grain crops, ahead of the average pace. Spring wheat was 21 percent harvested by week’s end, more than a week ahead of average. Durum wheat turning was at 64 percent, and harvest was 6 percent complete. Barley and oats were 26 and 38 percent harvested, respectively, both ahead of last year and average. Corn silking, at 91 percent complete, gained 31 percentage points from the previous week. Soybeans fully podded advanced to 26 percent complete. Corn crop conditions were rated 34 percent good to excellent, compared with 69 percent on average. Soybeans were rated 37 percent good to excellent, compared with 70 percent last year. LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT Livestock: Livestock producers continued baling hay, including CRP acreage. Pasture and range conditions were rated 7 percent good to excellent, compared with 46 percent on average. Stockwater supplies were rated 29 percent very short, 35 short and 36 adequate. The second cutting of alfalfa was 74 percent complete, while harvest of other hay was 90 percent complete. The hay crop condition was rated 11 percent good to excellent, compared with 75 percent good to excellent last year. Thunderstorms moved across eastern parts of the state on Tuesday, bringing up to an inch of rain in some areas. Temperatures warmed through midweek, with many areas climbing into the 90s under dry conditions. Slightly cooler temperatures arrived toward the end of the week, with highs in the 80s east to around 90 degrees west. Intense heat moved in on Saturday and Sunday, with highs ranging from the mid-90s to low 100s. Several record high temperatures were set on Sunday, including Bismarck, Jamestown and Williston. Thunderstorms developed late on Sunday, stretching from central to northeastern North Dakota. Heavy rainfall occurred across several counties in extreme northeast North Dakota, where some locations picked up close to 3 inches of rain. Outlook, July 31-August 6: A cold front will move across the state on Monday, bringing much cooler temperatures and lower humidity. A few showers and thunderstorms may develop along the front, especially in the southeastern parts of the state. Look for a chance of thunderstorms in the west on Tuesday. There will be another chance of thunderstorms in the western half of the state on Friday and into Saturday. High temperatures will be in the upper 70s northeast to the mid-80s southwest on Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures will warm a bit on Thursday with highs in the low 90s south and west to the mid-80s north and east. Temperatures should remain in the 80s for daily highs across the state for the rest of the week.
