nd-crop-weather STATE NORTH DAKOTA CROP, LIVESTOCK & WEATHER REPORT RELEASE DATE, WEEK ENDING DATE Released: August 7, 2006 For Week Ending: August 6, 2006 ISSUE ND-CW3106 AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY General: Spring wheat harvest neared fifty percent complete, over two weeks ahead of average, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. Last week brought milder temperatures as most districts were close to seasonal norms. Thunderstorms brought rainfall to isolated locations; however, crops in most areas continued to be stressed by drought conditions. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 57 percent very short, 34 short and 9 adequate, compared with the five-year (2001-2005) average of 10 percent very short, 26 short, 58 adequate and 6 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 14 percent good to excellent compared with 82 percent the previous year. Statewide, on average, there were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork. FIELD CROPS REPORT Crops: Small grain harvest moved rapidly due to favorable harvest conditions. Spring wheat was 48 percent harvested by week’s end. Durum wheat harvest was 14 percent complete, over a week ahead of average. Barley and oats were more than halfway harvested by week’s end, both ahead of last year and average. Dry edible peas harvested, at 73 percent complete, gained 35 percentage points from the previous week. Corn dough, at 28 percent complete, was 10 percentage points ahead of the average pace. Soybeans fully podded advanced to 47 percent complete. Corn crop conditions were rated 30 percent good to excellent, compared with 78 percent on average. Soybeans were rated 31 percent good to excellent, compared with 69 percent last year. Crop condition ratings were virtually unchanged from the previous week. LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT Livestock: The second cutting of alfalfa was 81 percent complete, while harvest of other hay was 92 percent complete. The hay crop condition was rated 13 percent good to excellent, compared with 71 percent good to excellent last year. Pasture and range conditions were rated 7 percent good to excellent, compared with 43 percent on average. Stockwater supplies were rated 31 percent very short, 38 short and 31 adequate. Reporters noted some producers were hauling water to their livestock. A cold front moved across the state on Monday and brought more seasonal temperatures and lower humidity to the region. Highs ranged from the upper 70s north to the low 80s south with overnight lows in the 50s statewide. Warmer air began to push back into the state for midweek; however, humidity levels remained relatively low. Daytime highs on Wednesday reached to around 90 degrees south and west to the low 80s north and east. The warmest temperatures occurred on Friday, with highs in the upper 80s to mid-90s. Precipitation for the week was scattered across the state, with the eastern and southern areas seeing the majority of the showers and thunderstorms. Outlook, August 7-13: A fairly active weather pattern will be shaping up across the state this week. There will be several chances for showers and thunderstorms across the majority of the state through the end of the workweek. The western areas will see a chance of isolated storms late on Monday and into Tuesday. There will be a chance of scattered showers and storms in the eastern half of the state beginning late on Tuesday and during the day on Wednesday. Look for morning showers in the southeast on Thursday, with dry conditions across the rest of the state. Another disturbance will bring scattered showers and storms to the west on Friday. Temperatures will be in the upper 80s to low 90s north and the mid to upper 90s in the south and west for the first half of the week. Temperatures will be cooler for the second half of the week, with highs around 90 degrees south to the low and mid-80s north. The weekend should see temperatures in the 80s.
