nd-crop-weather STATE NORTH DAKOTA CROP, LIVESTOCK & WEATHER REPORT RELEASE DATE, WEEK ENDING DATE Released: June 25, 2007 For Week Ending: June 24, 2007 ISSUE ND-CW2607 AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY General: Above average temperatures dried out fields and pushed the developmental progress of all crops, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. Dry, windy days allowed producers to get back into the fields. Humid environmental conditions pressured crops with leaf disease and insect problems. Reporters noted that producers started chemical applications to prevent crop damage. Areas throughout the state received scattered thunderstorms. Some received hail, but no reports of damage thus far. Post emergence spraying for the control of broadleaf weeds and wild oats was 85 and 92 percent complete, respectively. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 96 percent adequate to surplus, compared with the five-year (2002-2006) average of 77 percent adequate to surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 1 percent very short, 6 short, 74 adequate and 19 surplus. Statewide, on average, there were 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork. FIELD CROPS REPORT Crops: Small grain crop development in the jointed and boot stages were ahead of average, while small grains in the headed stage were at or ahead of average. Small grain crop conditions were rated mostly good to excellent. Spring wheat, at 87 percent jointed and 57 percent boot was behind last year, but remained ahead of average. Durum wheat jointed was 54 percent complete, ahead of average. Emergence was at least at the average pace for all other crops. Canola in the rosette stage was 91 percent complete which moved ahead of last year. Dry edible peas in the flowering developmental stage made the most progress, advancing 35 percentage points during the week, to 60 percent complete. All other crop conditions were rated mostly good to excellent. LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT Livestock: Hay harvest was in full-swing by week’s end. The first cutting of alfalfa was 31 percent complete, while other hay was 15 percent complete. Both hay crops were behind last year, but ahead of the average pace. Hay condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 2 poor, 19 fair, 61 good and 17 excellent. Pasture and range conditions were rated 1 percent very poor, 2 poor, 14 fair, 62 good and 21 excellent, compared with 8 percent very poor, 15 poor, 28 fair, 40 good and 9 excellent on average. Stockwater supplies were rated 94 percent adequate to surplus, compared with 84 percent adequate to surplus on average.
