nd-crop-weather STATE NORTH DAKOTA CROP, LIVESTOCK & WEATHER REPORT RELEASE DATE, WEEK ENDING DATE Released: July 9, 2007 For Week Ending: July 8, 2007 ISSUE ND-CW2807 AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY General: Above normal temperatures prevailed last week as all crops made excellent progress, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. With only scattered precipitation received the past few weeks, moisture and heat stress are starting to show in crops and pastures. Reports noted that producers continued to apply chemicals to protect their crop’s high yield potential. Post emergence spraying for the control of broadleaf weeds and wild oats was virtually complete at 98 and 99 percent, respectively. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 73 percent adequate to surplus. This compares with last year and the five-year (2002-2006) average, of 26 and 69 percent adequate to surplus, respectively. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 1 percent very short, 16 short, 77 adequate and 6 surplus. Statewide, on average, there were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork. FIELD CROPS REPORT Crops: Adequate moisture for crops continues to be a concern for producers as their crops have entered critical developmental stages. Over half of the durum wheat was headed by week’s end. Small grain crop development in the milk stage made the most progress during the week. Barley, spring wheat and oats in the milk stage, advanced at least 32 percentage points to 54, 41 and 48 percent complete, respectively. Small grain crop conditions were rated mostly good to excellent. Corn silking, at 7 percent complete, was ahead of both last year and average. Potatoes in the blooming developmental stage advanced 27 percentage points during the week to 67 percent complete. Although limited moisture has caused some deterioration of all other crop conditions, they remain being rated mostly good to excellent. LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT Livestock: Warm, dry weather allowed producers to make excellent progress harvesting hay during the week. Other hay, at 55 percent complete, advanced 21 percentage points from last week. The first cutting of alfalfa was 85 percent complete by week’s end. The cutting of both hay crops was behind last year, but ahead of the average pace. Hay condition was rated 3 percent poor, 15 fair, 63 good and 19 excellent. Pasture and range conditions were rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 19 fair, 63 good and 14 excellent, compared with 13 percent very poor, 15 poor, 26 fair, 37 good and 8 excellent on average. Stockwater supplies were rated 91 percent adequate to surplus, compared with 61 percent adequate to surplus last year.
