nd-crop-weather STATE NORTH DAKOTA CROP, LIVESTOCK & WEATHER REPORT RELEASE DATE, WEEK ENDING DATE Released: July 30, 2007 For Week Ending: July 29, 2007 ISSUE ND-CW3107 AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY General: Mostly dry conditions and above normal temperatures prevailed across the state except for areas in the northeast and southeastern counties which received heavy amounts of precipitation last week, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. The hot, dry conditions were beneficial for small grain harvest, but continued to stress crop development. Heavy rains received in the northeast were a problem for small grains in the swath. Some leaf diseases and head scab were found in wheat in areas that received excess moisture. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 57 percent adequate to surplus. This compares with last year and the five-year (2002-2006) average of 10 and 51 percent adequate to surplus, respectively. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 68 percent adequate to surplus, down from 75 percent adequate to surplus the previous week. Statewide, on average, there were 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork. FIELD CROPS REPORT Crops: The small grain harvest was just beginning last week, with most crops behind last year’s early pace, but ahead of the average. As of July 29, spring wheat was 6 percent harvested, compared with 19 percent last year and 5 percent on average while 77 percent of the crop was turning and beyond. Durum wheat was 5 percent harvested compared with 5 percent last year and 2 percent on average while 48 percent was turning and beyond. The barley and oat harvest was also underway by week’s end with 16 percent harvested for barley and 10 percent for oats. Small grain crop conditions were rated mostly good, but continue to show a slight decrease from the previous week. Development of all other crops also made good progress as the warm temperatures promoted crop growth. Corn was 86 percent in the silking and beyond stage compared with 87 percent last year and 68 percent on average. Soybeans had 8 percent of their acreage in the fully podded and beyond stage compared with 24 percent last year and the average of 10 percent. Dry edible beans were 3 percent fully podded, behind last year’s 12 percent and the average of 4 percent. Dry edible peas were 27 percent harvested, behind last year’s 35 percent harvested. The sunflower crop was 30 percent blooming and beyond, behind last year’s 58 percent but ahead of the average of 25 percent. Overall, all other crop conditions deteriorated slightly, but remain mostly good to excellent. LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT Livestock: Haying progress was aided by hot, dry conditions during the week. The second cutting of alfalfa was 52 percent complete while other hay baling was 86 percent complete, both behind last year. Hay condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 23 fair, 59 good and 14 excellent, down slightly from the previous week. Pasture and range conditions were rated 1 percent very poor, 8 poor, 29 fair, 55 good and 7 excellent, compared with the average of 17 percent very poor, 20 poor, 28 fair, 31 good and 5 excellent. Stockwater supplies were at 82 percent adequate to surplus, well above last year’s 37 percent.
