nd-crop-weather STATE NORTH DAKOTA CROP, LIVESTOCK & WEATHER REPORT RELEASE DATE, WEEK ENDING DATE Released: September 17, 2007 For Week Ending: September 16, 2007 ISSUE ND-CW3807 AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY General: On September 14, Thursday night into Friday morning lows dropped to the 20s in the western half of the state causing a killing frost, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. The growing season for corn, soybeans and dry edible beans ended due to a killing frost in freeze affected areas. Low temperatures ranged from 20 degrees F in Bottineau to 36 degrees F in Carrington. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 11 percent very short, 36 short, 52 adequate and 1 surplus, compared with 22 percent very short, 36 short, 41 adequate and 1 surplus last year. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 87 percent short to adequate, compared with last year and the five-year (2002-2006) average of 62 and 75 percent, respectively. Statewide, on average, there were 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork. FIELD CROPS REPORT Crops: Rain is needed for the germination of winter wheat and to improve fall tillage conditions. Durum wheat harvest, at 96 percent, was nearly complete which was more than two weeks ahead of average. Good developmental progress was made by all other crops. Corn dented was 93 percent complete, while corn mature was 48 percent complete, almost a week ahead of average. Soybeans had 74 percent of their acreage in the dropping leaves stage, compared with 87 percent last year and 57 percent on average, respectively. Soybean harvest was underway. Dry edible beans were 53 percent cut, while harvest was 33 percent complete, both behind last year but slightly ahead of average. Flaxseed harvest was 86 percent complete by week's end. Potatoes made the most harvest progress during the week advancing 26 percentage points to 40 percent dug. Sugarbeets lifted was 8 percent complete by week's end, equal to last year and ahead of average. The sunflower crop had 79 percent of their acreage with their bracts turned yellow and 37 percent of their acreage with their bracts turned brown, ahead of the average pace. LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT Livestock: Hay hauling and cutting silage were the main activities during the week. Pasture and range conditions were rated mostly fair to good at 77 percent. This compares with last year when conditions were rated mostly very poor to poor at 62 percent. Stockwater supplies were 77 percent adequate to surplus, compared with 37 percent last year and 60 percent on average. On Monday, isolated showers moved out of the eastern regions of the state as highs stayed in the 60s to 70s. Tuesday dried out as highs cooled to the upper 50s to 60s. Wednesday continued to stay dry as highs were in the 60s to 70s on the eastern half of the state and in the 70s to 80s on the western half of the state. On Thursday, a few isolated showers moved mainly through the northeastern and east central regions of the state as highs cooled back down to the 50s to 60s. On September 14, Thursday night into Friday morning lows dropped to the 20s in the western half of the state causing a freeze warning to be issued while the central area of the state had a frost advisory as lows there stayed in the 30s. Friday stayed dry as highs were in the 50s to 60s. Saturday stayed fairly dry as highs rose into the 70s to 80s. On Sunday, some scattered showers moved through the southwest area of the state as highs rose into the 70s to 80s. Outlook, September 17-23: Monday will start off with scattered storms in the eastern half of the state as highs stay warm in the 80s. On Tuesday, scattered storms and rain will bring a threat of precipitation to the south and eastern parts of the state as highs drop to the 70s. Wednesday isolated showers bring a chance of precipitation to the western half of the state as highs cool even more to the 60s to 70s. Thursday scattered storms will cover most of the state as highs stay in the 60s to 70s. On Friday, scattered storms might occur in the eastern half of the state. Saturday dries out a bit with the threat of an isolated shower in the southern and western areas of the state as highs warm into the 70s. On Sunday, isolated showers will bring precipitation to most of the state with highs in the 60s to 70s.
