nd-crop-weather STATE NORTH DAKOTA CROP, LIVESTOCK & WEATHER REPORT RELEASE DATE, WEEK ENDING DATE Released: September 24, 2007 For Week Ending: September 23, 2007 ISSUE ND-CW3907 AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY General: Mostly dry conditions and above normal temperatures allowed producers to make good harvest progress during the week, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. On September 20, Thursday night and into early Friday morning, thunderstorms produced golf ball sized hail in the east central district. Reporters in northern districts commented that rain is needed for the germination of winter wheat. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 11 percent very short, 35 short, 53 adequate and 1 surplus, compared with 12 percent very short, 36 short, 50 adequate and 2 surplus last year. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 88 percent short to adequate, compared with last year and the five-year (2002-2006) average of 68 and 75 percent, respectively. Statewide, on average, there were 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork. FIELD CROPS REPORT Crops: Corn mature was 65 percent complete, compared with 83 percent last year and 51 percent on average. Corn for grain harvest was 2 percent complete, equal to last year and ahead of average. Soybeans had 88 percent of their acreage in the dropping leaves stage, compared with 78 percent on average. Soybean harvest was 8 percent complete by week’s end, more than a week behind last year’s harvest progress. Dry edible beans were 73 percent cut, while harvest was 48 percent complete, both stages made good progress but remained behind last year. Flaxseed harvest was 93 percent complete by week’s end. The potato harvest was 54 percent complete, compared with 44 percent on average. Sugarbeets lifted was 11 percent complete, equal to last year and ahead of average. The sunflower crop had 91 percent of their acreage with their bracts turned yellow, a week behind last year but a week ahead of average. Sunflower bracts turned brown was 59 percent complete by week’s end. LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT Livestock: Hay hauling and cutting silage remained the main activities during the week. Corn cut for silage made the most harvest progress during the week advancing 26 percentage points to 62 percent complete. Pasture and range conditions were rated mostly fair to good at 77 percent. This compares with last year when conditions were rated mostly very poor to poor at 58 percent. Stockwater supplies were at 76 percent adequate to surplus, compared with 38 percent last year and 58 percent on average. Monday started off with showers exiting the eastern regions of the state with highs in the 70s to 80s. Tuesday cooled down into the 50s to 60s as some precipitation fell mainly in the southwestern regions of the state from some scattered storms. On Wednesday, highs were in the 60s as a system of showers brought precipitation to most of the state. Thursday highs warmed up into the 60s to 70s as a system of storms moved through most of the state. With Thursday’s storms, hail was reported in Barnes and Cass Counties. Friday highs stayed in the 60s as a few isolated showers occurred in the southeastern area of the state. Saturday stayed dry as highs soared into the upper 70s to lower 90s. Sunday highs were in the 70s to 90s with the higher temperatures occurring in the eastern half of the state as a system of storms moved through the state. With Sunday’s storms, two incidents of high winds were reported in Logan and McIntosh Counties. Outlook, Sept. 24-Oct. 1: Monday will start off the week wet as showers move through most of the state with highs in the upper 50s to lower 70s. Tuesday stays dry with highs in the upper 50s to 60s. On Wednesday, isolated showers are possible especially in the southern regions of the state with highs in the 60s. Thursday and Friday will stay dry and calm with highs in the 60s to 70s. On Saturday, there is a chance of an isolated shower throughout the state with highs in the 60s to 70s. The threat of precipitation continues statewide on Sunday with scattered showers and highs in the 60s.
