nd-crop-weather STATE NORTH DAKOTA CROP, LIVESTOCK & WEATHER REPORT RELEASE DATE, WEEK ENDING DATE Released: October 1, 2007 For Week Ending: September 30, 2007 ISSUE ND-CW4007 AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY General: Above normal temperatures allowed producers to make excellent harvest progress during the week, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. Warm temperatures in the Red River Valley temporarily halted sugarbeet harvest over the weekend. Average temperatures ranged from 4 degrees F above normal in the southeast and southwest districts to 11 degrees F above normal in the south central district. Reporters noted that current dry conditions are beneficial for row crop harvest. Rain is needed to help the winter wheat crop in some areas of the state. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 14 percent very short, 36 short, 49 adequate and 1 surplus, compared with the five-year (2002-2006) average of 14 percent very short, 31 short, 51 adequate and 4 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 87 percent short to adequate, compared with last year and average of 69 and 75 percent, respectively. Statewide, on average, there were 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork. FIELD CROPS REPORT Crops: Warm and windy conditions accelerated the dry down process of late season crops. Soybean harvest made the most progress during the week, advancing 29 percentage points to 37 percent complete, ahead of the average pace. Soybeans had 98 percent of their acreage in the dropping leaves stage, compared with 92 percent on average. Corn for grain harvest was 5 percent complete, equal to last year and average. Corn mature was 88 percent complete, compared with 94 percent last year and 69 percent on average. Dry edible beans were 86 percent cut, while harvest was 68 percent complete, both stages were behind last year but ahead of average. Flaxseed harvest was virtually complete at 97 percent by week’s end. Potatoes were 74 percent dug, ahead of both last year and average. Sugarbeets lifted were 16 percent complete, equal to the average pace. The sunflower crop had 77 percent of their acreage with their bracts turned brown, while harvest was underway with 3 percent complete. LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT Livestock: Hay hauling to winter feeding grounds, cutting silage and weaning calves were the main activities during the week. Corn cut for silage advanced 22 percentage points during the week to 84 percent complete. Pasture and range conditions were rated mostly fair to good at 78 percent. This compares with last year when conditions were rated mostly poor to fair at 62 percent. Stockwater supplies were at 76 percent adequate to surplus, compared with 39 percent last year and 59 percent on average. Monday started off cool with highs in the 50s to 60s as showers and storms occurring in the eastern half of the state while the western half saw a few light showers. Tuesday stayed in the 50s to 60s as a few isolated showers occurred in the southwestern part of the state. On Wednesday, highs warmed up to the 60s as a system of showers moved through the southern half of the state. Thursday was dry as highs continued to stay in the 60s. Friday warmed up to the 70s to 80s as some isolated storms occurred in the central area of the state. An incident of one inch hail was reported in Benson County with Friday’s storms. Saturday stayed warm in the 70s to 80s as an isolated storm produced precipitation in the southeastern part of the state. Sunday ended the week fairly dry with an isolated shower in the southeastern part of the state with highs cooling down to the 60s to 70s. Outlook, October 1-7: Monday will start off the week dry with highs in the 60s to 70s. On Tuesday, there is a chance of an isolated shower in the eastern half of the state as highs cool down into the 60s. The state will be dry and calm on Wednesday with highs continuing to stay in the 60s. On Thursday, a system of showers will move through the state with highs in the 60s. Friday cools down to highs in the 50s as more precipitation falls in the form of showers statewide. On Saturday, the system of showers exits the state as highs stay in the 50s. Sunday warms up a bit into the 50s to 60s as a few isolated showers might bring precipitation to the eastern half of the state.
