nd-crop-weather STATE NORTH DAKOTA CROP, LIVESTOCK & WEATHER REPORT RELEASE DATE, WEEK ENDING DATE Released: October 9, 2007 For Week Ending: October 7, 2007 ISSUE ND-CW4107 AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY General: Above normal temperatures continued to help crops dry down; however, isolated rain showers limited harvest progress in some areas of the state, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. Warm temperatures and rainfall in the Red River Valley stopped and started sugarbeet harvest throughout the week. Average temperatures ranged from 3 degrees F above normal in the northeast and central districts to 9 degrees F above normal in the southeast district. Reporters noted that winter wheat crops received beneficial moisture, but more moisture is needed to finish fall tillage and final winter wheat activities. Rain showers during the week improved topsoil moisture supplies from the previous week. As of October 7, they were rated 12 percent very short, 30 short, 57 adequate and 1 surplus. This compares to the five-year (2002-2006) average of 13 percent very short, 27 short, 56 adequate and 4 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 86 percent short to adequate, compared with last year and average of 71 and 77 percent, respectively. Statewide, on average, there were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork. FIELD CROPS REPORT Crops: Windy conditions aided the dry down process of late season crops, but a week ending storm system slowed harvest progress. Sugarbeets lifted made the most progress during the week, advancing 31 percentage points to 47 percent complete, equal to the average pace. Soybean harvest made excellent progress at 61 percent complete, still behind last year but was ahead of average. Corn for grain harvest was 13 percent complete, compared with 15 percent last year and 11 percent on average. Corn mature was nearly complete at 94 percent by week’s end. Dry edible beans were 93 percent cut, while harvest was 82 percent complete, both stages remained behind last year but ahead of average. Potatoes dug were 85 percent complete, equal to last year but ahead of the average pace. The sunflower crop had 90 percent of their acreage with their bracts turned brown, while harvest was 9 percent complete. Sunflower harvest progress was behind last year but equal to the average pace. LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT Livestock: As producers were nearly finished cutting corn silage, they remained busy by hauling hay to winter feeding grounds and weaning calves. Corn cut for silage was at 91 percent complete by week’s end, equal to the average pace. Pasture and range conditions were rated mostly fair to good at 74 percent. This compares with last year when conditions were rated mostly poor to fair at 56 percent. Stockwater supplies were at 73 percent adequate to surplus, compared with 41 percent last year and 58 percent on average.
