nd-crop-weather STATE NORTH DAKOTA CROP, LIVESTOCK & WEATHER REPORT RELEASE DATE, WEEK ENDING DATE Released: October 15, 2007 For Week Ending: October 14, 2007 ISSUE ND-CW4207 AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY General: Most producers are waiting for a killing frost so late season crops will dry down, allowing harvest to progress more rapidly, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office. Isolated showers early in the week slowed sugarbeet harvest progress in the Red River Valley. Reporters noted that producers were more frequently testing their soil due to high fertilizer costs. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 12 percent very short, 31 short, 56 adequate and 1 surplus. This compared with the five-year (2002-2006) average of 13 percent very short, 27 short, 57 adequate and 3 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 87 percent short to adequate, compared with last year and average of 73 and 78 percent, respectively. Statewide, on average, there were 5.2 days suitable for fieldwork. FIELD CROPS REPORT Crops: Cool weather and fog slowed harvest but normal fall field work continued. Once again, sugarbeets lifted made the most progress during the week, advancing 31 percentage points to 78 percent complete, and remained equal to the average pace. Soybean harvest made good progress at 74 percent complete, but was behind last year and the average pace. Corn for grain harvest was 27 percent complete, compared with 29 percent last year and 21 percent on average. Dry edible beans harvested was 88 percent complete, behind last year and average. Potatoes dug were 92 percent complete by week's end. Sunflower harvest was 16 percent complete, behind last year and the average pace. LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT Livestock: Producers were busy with fall activities. Corn cut for silage was virtually complete at 98 percent by week's end. Pasture and range conditions were rated mostly fair to good at 77 percent, compared with last year when conditions were rated mostly very poor to poor at 58 percent. Stockwater supplies were rated mostly fair to good at 92 percent, compared with 81 percent last year and 84 percent on average.
