July 18, 2000

Highlights

Robust's popularity strengthened and dominated as the number one barley variety for North Dakota in 2000. It accounted for 79.1 percent of the 1.75 million acres planted, up from 68.6 percent in 1999. This was the 15th out of 16 years that Robust was the leading variety. Stander claimed second place by surpassing Foster, which dropped to third among malting barley and fourth among all barley varieties. These three barley varieties accounted for 85.6 percent of the planted acres and are recommended by the American Malting Barley Association (AMBA) for malting and brewing in 2000

Conlon and Stark were the top feed varieties, ranking third and sixth overall, with 2.5 percent and 1.8 percent of barley acres, respectively.

North Dakota continued to rank first in barley planted acreage in the United States, with 30.7 percent of the nation's total. Planted acres in North Dakota were 1.75 million in 2000, up from 1.35 million in 1999. In 2000, there were 5.7 million planted acres in the United States compared to 5.2 million in 1999.

Survey Description

This data is based on results of a June Survey conducted by USDA's North Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service of nearly 900 barley producers. Thank you to each person who supplied data and made this report possible. Results include acreage and percentages at the state and district levels. Variety data and planted district acreage are survey averages, not official estimates. The number of reports produce reliable state averages. The AMBA provided supporting funds for the survey. The North Dakota State University Extension Service provided variety descriptions.

Malting Varieties

Robust remained the most popular barley variety in 2000 by a substantial margin over all other varieties in North Dakota. It accounted for 79.1 percent of the total barley acres planted. Robust was the leading variety in all districts, except the southwest district. This six-row barley is characterized by its medium height, medium-strong straw strength, and medium relative maturity.

Stander moved up to second place but continued its slide in popularity, representing 4.1 percent of the total barley acres planted in North Dakota. Most of its planted acres are found in the northwest, southeast, northeast and central districts. Stander, a six-row barley, is characterized by medium-short height, very strong straw strength, and medium maturity.

Foster, ranked third among malting barley, dropped down to the fourth position of all barley varieties with 2.4 percent of all barley acres planted, down from 8.2 percent last year. The vast majority of its planted acres are found within the central and southeast districts. Foster is a six-row barley that has medium-short height, strong straw strength, and medium maturity.

Feed Varieties

Conlon was the leading the feed variety for the second year in a row, representing 2.5 percent of the total barley acres planted. It was the leading barley variety planted in the southwest district. It is a two-row barley of medium-short height, has medium straw strength and early relative maturity.

Stark moved up in ranking to the second most popular feed barley variety and was ranked sixth among all varieties with 1.8 percent of the total acres planted, down from 2.3 percent last year. Stark is a two-row barley variety that was a fairly popular variety in the southwest and south central districts. The medium- tall height variety has medium straw strength, and medium-late relative maturity.
