RAMEY REYNOLDSBURG, OH (614) 728-2100 OHIO'S 2009 AVERAGE CORN AND SOYBEAN YIELDS UP FROM LAST YEAR Ohio's 2009 average corn yield is estimated at 174 bushels per acre, up 8 bushels from the November forecast, and up 39 bushels from the previous year. The estimate of 174 bushels per acre is a record for Ohio. Producers harvested 3.14 million acres for grain this past year, compared to 3.12 million acres in 2008. Total State production of 546.4 million bushels is 30 percent above the 2008 total. Acreage harvested for silage is estimated at 170,000 acres, up 30,000 acres from the previous year. The average silage yield is estimated at 20.0 tons per acre. Ohio's average soybean yield for 2009 is estimated at 49 bushels per acre, up 1 bushel from the November forecast. Growers harvested 4.53 million acres of soybeans in 2009 from the estimated 4.55 million acres planted. Total soybean production is estimated at 222.0 million bushels, up 38 percent from the 161.3 million bushels produced in 2008. Alfalfa yields averaged 3.40 tons of dry hay per acre in 2009, while all Other hay averaged 2.40 tons per acre. Production of All hay increased 3 percent from 2008 to 2.88 million tons. Burley Tobacco production in Ohio for 2009 is estimated at 6.8 million pounds, a decrease of 2.4 percent from 2008. The average yield is estimated at 2,000 pounds from 3,400 harvested acres. Ohio's Potato production in 2009 is estimated at 704,000 cwt., an increase of 3 percent from 2008. Harvested potato acreage is estimated at 2,100, unchanged from the area harvested in 2008. The average State yield is estimated at 335 cwt. per acre, up 10 cwt. from the 2008 yield. Ohio's winter wheat acreage for 2010 is estimated at 800,000 acres, this is down 210,000 acres from 2009. U.S. corn for grain production is estimated at a record 13.2 billion bushels, up 2 percent from the November 1 forecast, and 1 percent above the previous record of 13.0 billion bushels set in 2007. U.S. grain yield is also estimated at a record level for 2009, at 165.2 bushels per acre. This is up 2.3 bushels from the November forecast and 4.9 bushels above the previous record of 160.3 bushels per acre set in 2004. U.S. Soybean production in 2009 totaled 3.36 billion bushels, up 1 percent from the November 1 forecast and up 13 percent from 2008. U.S. production is the largest on record. The average yield per acre is estimated at a record high 44.0 bushels, 0.7 bushel above the November 1 forecast and 4.3 bushels above last year's yield. Harvested area is up 2 percent from 2008 to a record 76.4 million acres. Production of dry hay in the U.S. for 2009 is estimated at 147 million tons, down 3 percent from the October 1 forecast but up 1 percent from the 2008 total. Area harvested is at 59.8 million acres, down 1 percent from the October 1 forecast and down 1 percent from 2008. The average yield, at 2.47 tons per acre, is down 0.07 ton from October but up 0.04 ton from the previous year. ###
