Precipitation averaged 0.13 inches, 0.57 inches below normal. There were 86 modified growing degree days, 30 days above normal. Reporters rated 4.6 days suitable for fieldwork during the seven-day period ending Friday, April 25, 2008. Topsoil moisture was rated 0 percent very short, 1 percent short, 76 percent adequate, and 23 percent surplus. Other field activities for the week included hauling manure, spreading fertilizer, field tillage, hauling corn to market, equipment preparation for planting, specialty and vegetable crop planting, tomato planting in high tunnels, asparagus harvest, and pre-plant nitrogen, lime, and herbicide applications. Reporters from the South Central district report that tobacco plants are up in outdoor beds and greenhouses. As of Sunday April 27 winter wheat jointed was at 43 percent, compared to 32 percent last year and 50 percent for the five year average (2003-2007). Corn acreage planted was at 9 percent, 3 days behind last year and 8 days behind the five-year average. Sixty percent of the Oats have been planted, which was 13 percent points ahead of last year, but 8 percentage points behind the five-year average. Oats emerged was at 8 percent which was 2 days ahead of last year, but 7 days behind the five-year average. Potato acreage planted was 27 percent complete, compared to 32 percent last year and 36 percent for the five-year average. Ohio's apple acres were 91 percent in the green tip stage, 8 days ahead of last year and one day ahead of the five-year average. Apples in full bloom were estimated at 39 percent, compared to 26 percent last year and 40 percent for the five-year average. Ohio's peach acres were at 89 percent in the green tip stage, six days ahead of last year and one day ahead of the five-year average. Peaches in full bloom were estimated at 58 percent, compared to 35 percent last year and 49 percent for the five-year average. CROP AND LIVESTOCK CONDITION Seventy-six percent of the winter wheat acreage was rated in fair-to-good condition, down 4 percentage points from last week. Hay condition was rated at 83 percent in fair-to-good condition, down 1 percentage point from last week. Pasture condition was rated at 79 percent in fair-to-good condition, compared to 77 percent last week. Seventy-eight percent of the apples were rated in fair-to-good condition, compared to 84 percent last week. Peaches were rated at 76 percent in fair-to-good condition, compared to 86 percent week. Eighty-five percent of the livestock were in fair-to-good condition, unchanged from last week.
