OR-crop-weather Oregon Crop Weather Released: November 13, 2012 Week ending: November 11, 2012 OR-CW3312 OREGON CROP WEATHER NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS SERVICE USDA, NASS, Oregon Field Office Phone: 503-326-2131 Released: November 13, 2012 Toll Free: 1-800-338-2157 Week ending: November 11, 2012 Email: nass-or@nass.usda.gov Volume: 33-12 Internet: www.nass.usda.gov/or Weather: Oregon weather was moderate, as most stations reported high temperatures in the 60's to lower 70's. All stations in the State reported below average precipitation. Outside of south central and coastal Oregon, most stations reported above normal temperatures. Madras and Prairie City continued to have the highest recorded temperature, at 86 degrees, above their normal highs for this time of the season. Most stations in Oregon, with exception to the Coast, reported below freezing overnight temperatures. Burns reported the lowest recorded temperature at 2 degrees. The above normal daytime temperatures dropped to colder, normal temperatures later in the week, bringing snow to some parts of the State. Bandon received the most precipitation at 1.55 inches, but still below its normal precipitation for this time of the year. Field Crops: Grass seed and wheat were growing well. Some fields in preparation for seeding and planting. Sugarbeet harvest was mostly done in Malheur County, except for a few straggler fields. Corn was the only crop left and its harvest will depend on moisture of corn and weather. Columbia Basin potatoes were being trucked out of sheds. Fruits and Nuts: Some apples, Asian pears, and hazelnuts were being harvested in Lane County. Most of the hazelnut harvest finished; despite the rainfall during the harvest season, it has been a low mold year for the hazelnut crop. Vegetables: Cole crops were doing well, but some cold weather will be happening the next few days. A few tomatoes and peppers were harvested this week. Nurseries and Greenhouses: Christmas trees were harvested. Livestock, Range and Pasture: Some livestock producers have started feeding hay due to the lack in acres of fall pasture in southern Oregon. In eastern Oregon, where there was snow in the forecast, cattlemen were working to get cattle out of the mountains and down to lower elevations. The County still has not had a killing frost, but temperatures were very cold and were helping to take plants into dormancy. No significant field work has been done this week. All types of crop harvest have been completed from vegetables to fruits and forages. JOSEPHINE: First part of the week moderate temperatures with overnight temperatures of 50 to 65 degrees. The last part of the week cooled down, having overnight temperatures of 30 to 38 degrees. Daytime temperatures ranged from 40 to 68 degrees. Very still air. The County did have 3/4 inch of precipitation total, mostly in the form of heavy dew and one day of squalls of snow and rain mixed. Work days were very productive and busy. Sales were off this year in truck gardens and nurseries due to very light traffic. New seeded fields were looking good as the seed didn't wash away! LANE: Grass seed and wheat were growing well. Some fields in preparation for seeding and planting. Some apples, Asian pears, and hazelnuts were being harvested. Winter annual weeds were germinating. Cole crops were doing well, but some cold weather will be happening the next few days. A few tomatoes and peppers were harvested this week. YAMHILL: Despite the mid October rainfall during the hazelnut harvest, it has been a low mold year. Hazelnut harvest completed. Eastern Oregon GRANT: Moisture was coming in the form of snow, but the County will take it any way it can get it. KLAMATH: Temperatures were in the mid to high 60's during the first part of the week, but were replaced by daytime highs in the 30's at the end of the week. Some precipitation on Thursday brought a little snow. Fall field work continued through the week. LAKE: Received precipitation during the week, mostly in the form of snow. County precipitation currently stands at 85 percent of normal since the start of the water year. Some livestock producers have started feeding hay due to the lack of fall pasture. MALHEUR: Most of week had high temperatures in the mid 50's. Mostly mild temperatures occurred during the first part of the week. The threat of rain or snow showers depended on location and elevation. Both are normal. The last two days had lows of 21 to 24 degrees, the coldest to date. Sugarbeet harvest was mostly done, except for a few straggler fields. Corn was the only crop left and its harvest will depend on moisture of corn and weather. Some could carry over. UNION/BAKER: Winter is here. Recent rainfall and snow over last 7 to 14 days have slowed harvest and planting. Snow and colder weather was still in the forecast. Corn harvest just finished yesterday. Only a small area of sunflowers and corn was left to harvest. Some winter wheat still needs to be planted. UMATILLA: Higher than normal temperatures early in the week have turned into normal freezing and colder conditions. Corn harvest was completed and potatoes were being trucked out of sheds. Winter wheat was emerging nicely. With snow in the forecast, cattlemen were working to get cattle out of the mountains and down to lower elevations.
