OR-crop-weather Oregon Crop Weather Released: November 19, 2012 Week ending: November 18, 2012 OR-CW3412 OREGON CROP WEATHER NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS SERVICE USDA, NASS, Oregon Field Office Phone: 503-326-2131 Released: November 19, 2012 Toll Free: 1-800-338-2157 Week ending: November 18, 2012 Email: nass-or@nass.usda.gov Volume: 34-12 Internet: www.nass.usda.gov/or Weather: Oregon weather chilled down, as most stations reported high temperatures in the upper 50's. A majority of stations in the State reported below average precipitation. With exception to central Oregon, most stations reported above normal temperatures. Madras and Prairie City continued to have the highest recorded temperature, at 66 degrees, above their normal highs for this time of the year. Most stations in Oregon, outside of central and eastern regions, reported above freezing overnight temperatures. Redmond reported the lowest recorded temperature at 19 degrees. A storm brought strong winds and rain to the Coast, causing several road closures and power outrages; flood warnings have been issued, along with forecasts of another storm. Astoria received the most precipitation at 4 inches, above its normal precipitation for this time of the year. Field Crops: Recent grass seed and winter wheat plantings were doing very well with the localized rain in Lane County. Newly planted wheat crop in Sherman and Wasco counties continued to grow well to the number of light showers and some warm temperatures mixed erratically in with the cooler, foggier ones. Umatilla wheat crop is planted and emerged, producing good stands so far. Fruits and Nuts: Hazelnut harvest was pretty much done, with medium to good yields. Some hazelnut growers were applying copper sprays to young trees to control bacterial blight. Some fall orchard spraying was also going on in Douglas County. Late season apple harvest was wrapping up in Yamhill County. A few late apple and winter pears were being harvested in Lane County; region had a nice crop of Asian pears. Vegetables: Broccoli is doing very well still. On the other hand, warm season vegetables, unless protected, have been rained or frozen out. Nurseries and Greenhouses: Deciduous trees in nurseries bear no more leaves. Some fall nursery digging was going on in Douglas County. Livestock, Range and Pasture: Some livestock producers have started feeding hay due to the lack in acres of fall pasture in southern Oregon. Due to the recent storm that struck the Coast, low lying pastures in Tillamook, Clatsop, and Columbia counties may be experiencing minor flooding. Streams were still running at summer levels. Top soil was moist, but no standing water or soggy conditions in fields yet. Some fall orchard spraying and fall nursery digging were going on in the area. JOSEPHINE: Overnight temperatures ranged 40 to 46 degree with daytime temperatures of 46 to 52 degrees. The County experienced fog, wind, and 3.5 inches of rain; the area did have a short bit of sun on Friday. Winter crops were doing very well. Ground was too wet to work. LANE: Overall this production season for the south Valley farmers has been better than average. Very few crop failures were reported. Prices for grass seed have been consistent with product movement. Future prices forecasted to be about the same as last year with expenses to be a bit higher. Recent grass seed and winter wheat plantings were doing very well with the localized rain. Hazelnut harvest was pretty much done, with medium to good yields. A few late apple and winter pears were being harvested. This year had a nice crop of Asian pears. Some local farm stands go until Thanksgiving. Local farmers markets have moved indoors in many locations. Winter annual weeds were coming back very strong. There are many local cole crops; broccoli is doing very well still. Warm season crops, unless protected, have been rained or frozen out. YAMHILL: Some hazelnut growers were applying copper sprays to young trees to control bacterial blight. Late season apple harvest was wrapping up. WASHINGTON: It has been very wet in the County, with some flooding in the area. The area received three inches of rain in one night this week. High temperatures ranged from 44 to 52 degrees. No deciduous trees in nurseries had leaves. Eastern Oregon SHERMAN/WASCO: Newly planted wheat crop has been blessed by the number of light showers and some warm temperatures mixed erratically in with the cooler, foggier ones. Wheat continued to grow. UNION/BAKER: Winter is here. Recent rainfall and snow over last 7 to 14 days have slowed harvest and planting. Snow and colder weather was still in the forecast. Corn harvest just finished yesterday. Only a small area of sunflowers and corn was left to harvest. Some winter wheat still needs to be planted. UMATILLA: The winter wheat for the coming year was in the ground and emerged. Stands of wheat looked good. Some fields of wheat are fairly small, but if the mild conditions continue, the area should continue to see them develop over the coming weeks. Soil moisture conditions were much improved with the fall rains the County has been experiencing.
