MAJOR CROP YIELDS BELOW 2001

Columbia, S.C., January 10, 2003: SOUTH CAROLINA'S major crop yields for 2002 were below 2001 due to the summer drought, announced the South Carolina Agricultural Statistics Service.

COTTON production totaled 130,000 bales, down 69 percent (293,000 bales) from 2001. The final 2002 average yield of 328 pounds per acre is up 76 pounds from the December forecast, but down 358 pounds from 2001, and down 299 pounds from 2000's yield. The final estimate of 290,000 acres planted, is down 10,000 acres from the previous year and 2000. Harvested acres totaled 190,000 acres is down 96,000 from December's estimate. Acres for harvest was down 106,000 acres from 2001 and down 100,000 from 2000. Cottonseed production was expected to total 45,000 tons, down 67 percent from 2001, and down 66 percent from 2000.

CORN production in 2002 totaled 12.0 million bushels, up 18 percent from the November forecast, but down 54 percent from 2001. The final yield per acre of 46 bushels, is up 11 bushels from November, but down 62 bushels from 2001, and down 19 bushels from 2000. Acres harvested for grain is at 260,000 which is up 20,000 acres from 2001, but down 20,000 from 2000. Acres planted at 320,000 are up 60,000 from 2001.

The 2002 SOYBEAN crop totaled 7.1 million bushels, down 20 percent from the 2001 production, and down 34 percent from 2000. The final yield per acre of 17 bushels is down 4 bushels from 2001, and down 8 bushels from 2000. Acres harvested at 415,000, is down 5,000 from 2001, and down 15,000 acres from 2000.

TOBACCO production was 59.5 million pounds, up 1 percent from November's forecast, but down 24 percent from 2001, and down 27 percent from 2000. The final yield per acre of 1,950 pounds, is down 500 pounds from 2001, and down 440 pounds from 2000. Acres harvested, at 30,500, was down 1,500 acres from 2001, and down 3,500 from 2000.

PEANUT production totaled 19.1 million pounds - down 37 percent from 2001, down 35 percent from 2000, and down 21 percent from the November's forecast. The final yield per acre of 2,200 pounds is down 800 pounds from 2001, down 750 pounds from 2000, and down 100 pounds from November's forecast. Acres harvested, at 8,700, is down 1,500 acres from 2001, and down 1,300 acres from 2000.
