RECORD CROP YIELDS SET FOR PEANUTS AND SOYBEANS

Columbia, S.C., January 12, 2004: SOUTH CAROLINA'S major crop yields for 2003 incuding record highs for peanuts and soybeans were above 2002 due to excellent weather during the growing season, announced the South Carolina Agricultural Statistics Service.

COTTON production totaled 330,000 bales, up 152 percent (199,000 bales) from 2002. The final 2003 average yield of 727 pounds per acre is up 413 pounds from 2002 and up 41 pounds from 2001's yield. The final estimate of 220,000 acres planted, is down 70,000 acres from the previous year and 80,000 below 2001. Harvested acres totaled 218,000 acres, up 18,000 acres from 2002 but down 78,000 from 2001. Cottonseed production was expected to total 111,000 tons, up 152 percent from 2002, but down 19 percent from 2001.

CORN production in 2003 totaled 22.6 million bushels, up 89 percent from 2002. The final yield per acre of 105 bushels, is up 59 bushels from 2002, but 3 bushels below the record high of 108 bushels set in 2001. Acres harvested for grain is 215,000, down 45,000 acres from 2002, and down 25,000 from 2001. Acres planted at 240,000 are down 80,000 from 2002.

The 2003 SOYBEAN crop totaled 11.8 million bushels, up 67 percent from the 2002 production, and up 33 percent from 2001. The final yield per acre of 28 bushels, a record high, is up 11 bushels from 2002, and up 7 bushels from 2001. Acres harvested at 420,000, is down 5,000 from 2002, and unchanged from 2001.

TOBACCO production was 63.0 million pounds, up 6 percent from 2002, but down 20 percent from 2001. The final yield per acre of 2,100 pounds, is up 150 pounds from 2002, but down 350 pounds from 2001. Acres harvested, at 30,000, was down 500 acres from 2002, and down 2,000 from 2001.

PEANUT production totaled 57.8 million pounds - up 202 percent from 2002, and up 89 percent from 2001. The final record high yield per acre of 3,400 pounds is up 1,200 pounds from 2002, and up 400 pounds from 2001. Acres harvested, at 17,000 is up 8,300 acres from 2002 and up 6,800 acres from 2001.
